It opened 50 years ago this week, on April 4, 1964, running 9 performances.
Here are some production photos.
I was just listening to this yesterday!
Love these! Love the Harvey Evans pics. Thanks!
If only JAY records would finally get the funds to release their complete recording after, what 15 years now? (They just finally released the complete One Touch of Venus, so...) In the mean time we can just keep listening to their posting of the complete Don't Ballet from it I guess... https://soundcloud.com/jayrecords/everybody-says-dont-dont
Happy Birthday AYC!
^ THIS!
I wish (and hope!) the Encores! performance a few years ago was recorded...if only for posterity purposes. That was possible my favorite Encores! to date.
'Anyone Can Whistle' is one of my all time favorite SONDHEIM songs...infact i love the whole score...from beginning to end...it's pure magic...
I have not seen most of these pictures before. Thank you SO much for posting! I love this show!! As if my avatar didn't already tell you that.
These are wonderful. Thank you so much for posting them, Mr. Nowack!
Excellent. Thank you for sharing. Plenty here I haven't seen before.
Some of the backdrops remind me of Top Cat (Boss Cat?).
And thrilled, 50 years later, to be seeing Dame Angela still on stage, tomorrow, in Blithe Spirit.
What a wonderful post celebrating a glorious, under-appreciated musical. It may have its flaws, and there are a lot of them, but I love it from start to finish!
Happy Birthday, ACW!!
Listening to the cast album for the first time, back when all I knew of Sondheim was "Sweeney", "Merrily" and "Company", I had a classic WTF moment hearing "Simple" for the first time. I remember looking over at my stereo in disbelief.
Does anybody know what sort of reviews the two act reduction of the show got?
Truly underrated Sondheim show. I love the OBC, I will give it a spin in honor of its anniversary! Those pics are great!
Mr.Nowack...you're the best. I just loved your HIGH SPIRITS spread last March as well as the FADE OUT! FADE IN! anniversary photos (did I miss SHE LOVES ME last April?). These are just as great. Just when I thought I'd seen all there is to see you pop up with more. Much appreciated!
