...and Kelli O'Hara?
I'd love to see this show on Broadway...but I cannot stand him.
Poor Brian D'Arcey James.
Saw this leaden version at Vassar this summer and couldn't have been more bored. Everything fun and interesting about this quirky show has been ironed to a bland flatness. You might think changing "Daisy" to "Davy" would set up some interesting and unusual gender issues, but the doctor pays utterly no attention to Davy, only to Melinda. Breaking the role into two performers also eradicates any link between the two characters - they have absolutely nothing in common. The interpolated songs are standard "get on a stage and sing" numbers with utterly no connection to the story. And the presentation of Davy & Warren would lead one to believe that Stonewall created an instant and total liberation in NYC gay life. Witless.

I am confused....will the character of "David" Gamble be played by a male actor? Or will the role be played by a female actor who is playing a male (David) allowing her to do the role of Melinda? (Victor/Victoria anyone?)
Or...will the role of David be played by a male who will dress in drag when he is Melinda.
My head hurts thinking about this.
At Vassar, Davy was played by a young man and Melinda was played by Anika Noni Rose. Melinda's entire story arc now consists only of her desire to be a singer - a desire that, by the way, has no significant obstacles.
newintown - posted before I read yours..thanks for the clarification. I would rather see the actor playing David also play Melinda. That would make the whole thing much more interesting.
I agree - and it would also be more interesting if the doctor's feelings for Melinda and Davy were linked and confused, with a more fluid view of sexuality. Of course, the producers probably fear that the tourists couldn't go for that.
hopefully strong revisions are mad for the broadway run, if all this is true, newintown. If its going straight to Broadway, though, looks like that won't be the case.
the producers are probably trying to aim for an older crowd (those that listen to crooners like Connick) and delight them with all those classic hits (which I'm honestly excited to hear)

The thought of the Doctor being in love with Melinda (who is really David) was the only interesting part of this update. If they ignore that- which seems a bit like brushing an elephants teeth while you ignore it's trunk- what's the point?
I'm not sure I'm getting your gist, Joe - the doctor falls in love with Melinda in the original, too, but because she's played by the same actress who plays Daisy, the line between the two is blurred.
In this new version, the line between Davy and Melinda is wide and sharp, and the doctor's feelings for Melinda never bleed over into any feelings for Davy. And Davy, despite a few comments about how cute the doctor is, never falls for him, either (because he and Warren are meant to be together in this version, a notion that the writer never invests with shades of gray).

I'd think there would be a big gulf between a heterosexual doctor falling for the alter ego of his female patient and a male one. He can be in love with Melinda, but she's really David- or at least, that's what the world sees, no?
Oh, I see - yes, that's what you would think, but in the Vassar production, they kept the two identities utterly separate - no one but the doctor ever saw his interaction with Melinda, so there was no gender confusion whatsoever. A completely missed opportunity to show something interesting.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
On the bright side, there's already more revivals planned for next season(Clear Day, Dancin' & Evita) than there is for this season(only How to Succeed.. & Anything Goes)
Harry and Kelli reunion????!!!!
well, since he appeals to an older crowd, their performance schedule should be:
Mon. - DARK
Tues. @ 7pm
Wed. @ 2pm & 7pm
Thurs. @ 2pm
Fri. @ 3pm
Sat. @ 2pm & 8pm
Sun. @ 3pm
Won't this be a "stretch" for Kelli?
Kelli would be more than capable of "streching" for this show! Harry and Kelli were HOT in Pajama Game.
I believe the creative team are set on Davy being a man, and Melinda being a woman of color. As versatile as Kelli is, I think both are out of her range.

I hope they pull it together. This is one of my favorite scores of the sixties.

Wait, where does it say Kelli O'Hara is in it?
Nowhere, love, you need to read the whole thread sometimes, in order to find the sense in an isolated comment.
