Anyone who thinks Harvey will be pleasing to listen to in LA CAGE needs to have their ears checked. I have tons of confidence he will act the role well, but this is a musical. And Albin requires a singer. There's a line between an actor who can sing and an actor who quite literally croaks.
This is going to be a rough one on the ears, that's for sure.
What about his "Air" on the Hair Actors Fund recording? Terrific!
Looks like somebody just posted this: Harvey Fierstein singing I Am What I Am. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ryZxRF2dv4

Not really all that terrific...
Terrific? Maybe in a "haha, how funny, listen to his funny-sounding voice" kind of way. But can you honestly tell me that you think that is a terrific vocal performance of that song? Absolutely not. He is an ear-sore. A terrific actor and writer, yes. Singer? Noooooo.

When I recently saw him in Fiddler, the voice was really annoying at first, but then I got used to it. Granted, singing Albin is different than singing Tevye, but I'm still very curious to see how he tackles La Cage, and if the fact that he'll act the hell out of it will make up for the fact that he won't really be able to sing it.

I would venture to say none of you ever set foot in a bar with drag performances during the La Cage era. You have no idea how perfectly appropriate Harvey is.
Oh my *god*.
The clip of him singing "I am what I am" is excruciatingly, excruciatingly painful. It sounds like an electrolarnyx. Like, I often think that people here have extreme and polarised opinions, but I don't think the response to his 'singing' here is exaggerated at all.
My throat almost feels sore listening to it :P.

I don't care how drag was in the La Cage era, the fact is that this is a musical. I don't think it's too hard to as that the lead who has many songs to you know sound pleasant when singing. Doug Hodge isn't the best singer, but he sounds pleasant.
Harvey's going to do a Marilyn Monroe impression? Or lord save us from that.
Should it still be playing come then David Hyde Pierce would be still in La Bete. Also, I would rather see him as Albin.
-------------------------
As far as I can make out, La Bete closes on Jan 9th, Hyde Pierce could feasibly go into La Cage on Feb 15.

Oh, IBDB didn't list a closing date so I thought it was open ended.
LA BETE is scheduled to close 2/12/11.
ETA- Never mind, apparently it is closing 1/9/11.
