Good casting I think to get he show through the tought Winter months.
I've feeling after his stint, Broadway may get La Barrowman for the Summer if the Box Office is still going on the show...
Can't see Mike Myers in this show.
Excuse me, but don't you mean "LA Meyers"?
La PalJoey thinks La Fierstein is going to be le plus incroyable singing "Je Suis Que Je Suis."
Ooh-la-la, la-LA!
Mais non, Sueleeen, ma petite chou?

I happen to love watching Harvey on stage---(except I'm not sure I want to see him in the girdle scene) :)
AnythingGoes2, so funny you mentioned Barrowman. The day before they announced this, I was walking home listening to the new recording and wondering about who they would get to replace Hodge/Grammar. As I was musing, I was praying that it would be Barrowman. It would make my heart flutter!!!

this is the best news I have heard in years
I think of his acting in TST the movie when
he tells his Mother off...and I can just see
him in the Rex Harrison mode sing/talking I am What I AM
and the hankys coming out to wipe the tears...HARVEY WILL
RULE
I know this goes against conventional wisdom here, but I wasn't a fan of Harvey in either Hairspray or Fiddler, so I can't imagine liking him in this role, despite his closeness to the material. But, I'll add the honest disclaimer whenever I'm critical of casting: I'd love to be proved wrong.
Oh darn. Guess I'll have to miss this cast as well.
You can listen to 20 seconds of Harvey singing "I Am What I Am" as an encore from his one-man show This Is Not Going to Be Pretty which was recorded live.

That was hideous.
The full song is on youtube.
Wow, that was painful.
That sounds terrible.
This has all the makings of a train wreck.

I'd be curious to hear how he got into musical theatre in the first place. Writing I can understand, acting in plays I can understand, but he doesn't seem especially suited to being in musicals with tricky scores. Edna in Hairspray is such an easy role to sing, and he somehow made Tevye work, but hearing him sing I Am What I Am now gives me serious doubts. A great actor he is, but a great singer he is not. And I'm sure he knows this. What makes him keep doing musicals?

Just listened to the whole thing & OUCH! Just ouch!
Is there really no other actor they could get?

Touché!
I'll see it. No matter what, it will be a memorable performance. Harvey is always exciting to watch on the stage.
Personally though I wsh they had gone to a different actor.
I always thought Denis O'Hare would be wonderful as Albin.

I believe Harvey got his start as a performer and took up writing only because he couldn't find roles tailored to his talents. And I think he used to support himself as a drag queen, performing in shows much like the ones depicted in TST.

I'm shocked to see so many familiar faces to this board stating what a disaster this is going to be...Harvey Fierstein is a Broadway legend and this is probably going to be one of the best performances of the year. If you want a boisterous baritone hollering out some easy mid range notes, go home and put on George Hearn. I'll take Harvey anyday. He's gonna act the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiz outta this.

So you're going to tell me you thought his rendition was good?

A version he sang in a cabaret act at the Bottom Line 15 years ago is not necessarily how he'll sing it in context as Albin. Fiddler showed he was capable of more nuanced sound. Maybe he'll sound exactly the same. Maybe it will be devastating. Maybe he'll be terrible. But no one knows yet.
Got my cabaret table seats for Harvey in April - my thoughts on his Georges...
...David Hyde Pierce
Matthew Broderick
Martin Short
Any other ideas?

Should it still be playing come then David Hyde Pierce would be still in La Bete. Also, I would rather see him as Albin.

His voice hasn't gotten any better in the last 15 years...

Exactly. It's not as if he's suddenly developed a great singing voice.
