I remember there was some white Jewish girl who played Mimi in the 2nd US Nat'l Tour and also on Broadway as an understudy. This was years ago and I forget her but she had longish unruly uber curly blonde hair and sky blue eyes, so as long as the actress can pull off the 'look', she really doesn't need to be ethnic correct.

I know Ava Gaudet understudied Mimi and Maureen and went on for Mimi attleast once...until she became full time maureen

Posted: 5/3/08 at 9:03pmThere has never been a Caucasian girl who was cast as Mimi. There have been mixed-race actors who have been cast but never one who is Caucasian. Ava Gaudet was cast as Maureen in the tour and then went to the Broadway cast as Mrs. C and she covered both Maureen and Mimi.

I stand corrected with the 'swing' bit, but she DID play Mimi countless of times on tour and on Broadway and that's what the original poster questioned -- has there ever been a white Mimi. She DID play Mimi therefore that qualifies her as someone who has played Mimi.

Posted: 5/4/08 at 9:53amI never disputed that Yassmin played Mimi, as a swing. There have been swings who have covered various roles who have not been the traditionally cast 'type'. Obviously, a swing covers many roles and in a show like Rent, that is going to cross racial and ethnic lines sometimes. However, the fact remains that she is Latina, not Caucasian. Actually, if you were going to tout Yassmin (thinking she was white) as an example in this discussion, you would have been better off mentioning Karmine since Karmine actually WAS cast to play the role, both on tour and on Broadway.

Many hispanics/latins are "white" and not ethnic looking whatsoever.
Miss Ayers proves this point, as does Daphne Zuniga, Christina Aguilera, Cameron Diaz, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez... its an endless list.

And in these discussions of a 'white Mimi', which, by the way, have gone on for years, it is almost always asked by a white teenaged girl who wants to play Mimi someday. In any case, Miss Alers (not Ayers) is Latina, and to make this discussion even more pointless, was never cast as Mimi.

yassmin is not a white jewish girl who was cast in the national tour of rent.
she was an original broadway cast understudy who played almost every single role on broadway, and was brought in as a replacement full time Mimi on tour for a while. i adore her work. but shes latina, and she and her sister Karmine are staples of RENTworld- i dont know anyone who thinks of them as white jewish girls.

IF you make the effort to re-read my follow-up posts I CLEARLY state: she LOOKS like a white jewish girl. She obviously ISN'T. I'm stating she LOOKS like a jewish white girl though she is NOT.
Valerie Harper and Anne Bancroft have extensively played jewish women though both actresses are catholic Italian/Americans. Though they LOOK jewish, they are NOT.
Again... I'm not saying Yassmin IS jewish -- I'm clearly (and repeatedly) stating that she LOOKS jewish. Learn to decipher the difference in terminology, folks.
