songanddanceman, I thought it was obvious that we were discussing U.S./Canadian productions. Obviously, many (maybe even most!)of the dozens of international productions did not follow the ethnic/racial guidelines which are delineated in the callsheets for N.A. auditions for the show.

The book and lyrics of the show are only clear about Mimi and Mark's ethnicities unless you believe the fact that Joanne helps "unwed mothers in Harlem" is evidence of her race.

Well, she does say "where the Spanish babies cry" in OT. I'm sure that there have been white Mimis in the tour productions and I know that in the Reykjavik production, she was blonde hair and blue eyes.

I always figured Mimi should be of Latin/Hispanic/whichever origin. But only because of her last name: Marquez, which is primarily of that descent.
