Hate Wicked?

Do a lot of you really hate Wicked or is it just the over-exposure and the diehard fans that have turned you off?

The reason I ask is because I'm one of the few who haven't seen the show. I'm going in April, and I was so excited but I have to admit, a lot of you are kind of peeing on my parade here.

So, are there really that many Wicked-haters out there?

I wouldn't say that I "hate" it - but its just not a good show by any stretch of the imagination, as far as I'm concerned.

"I don't really get the ending,all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang,and later she kissed him on the toilet,after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung,and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen,and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady?Please help me,thank u very much!" There are some people who hate Wicked but most of them are just because of all the overexpossure it gets on this board and then the rest of them are just stuck up about what "good" theatre is and they think it's too "fluffy" they can't see for the good, magical fun it is. So don't let anybody poo poo on your good time, it's a great show especially if you like singing, dancing, costumes, setting, and lighting, then you should have a wonderful time.

I don't hate Wicked at all. I just hate the obsession with it. It isn't a masterpiece. It is an entertaining show and the performances, at least when it first started were impressive.

i agree with Tom1071 ....the show is ok....the fans are annoying tho....it felt like going to see a backstreet boys concert more than a bway show.

I don't hate "Wicked". I hate the fact that there are some fans out there who have seen a limited number of shows on Broadway (some of them having seen ONLY "Wicked") who post things like "It's the greatest show EVER" etc. It's not a bad show at all. I've actually seen it twice but, trust me, there are a great number of shows that a far better.

i like wicked, i would've liked it better if i hadn't gone in having already read the book. its just the overexpsure and tenny-bopper fans that have turned me sour.

It's one of those things where there is not ONE show that EVERYONE likes. Everything, in my opinion, seems to get mixed reviews. As with every show, some people will love it, some will hate it, some will not care either way. You have to see it for yourself, make your own opinion, and enjoy.

I don't hate WICKED at all. I don't think it's particularly good, but I don't HATE it. What I hate (like everyone else above has just stated) are the rabid fans who sincerely believe that it's the greatest show ever and continue to shove it down our throats - especially on this board. So, no, I don't hate it, but the crazy fans make me FEEL like hating it.

i dopnt hate it at all..i got tickets for my birthday to see it and im extremely excited...i just think tis a little overrated i mean its not my FAVORITE show but id say its up there...maybe in the top 10 or 15...

I REALLY like Wicked- it's not in my Top 20 Musicals list or anything, but I had an amazing night at the theater when I saw it (original cast). Most of the "wicked haters" on this board really don't hate the show... They criticize it more than they would if they DIDN'T need to knock the kids who think it's the only/ best show in the universe off their a*ses.
Please go see it, and if you love it, great!!! It's a good show, in my opinion. And even if it wasn't, you'd still be entitled to love it. Just be aware of the mood (which is well- justified) on this board. Post on the Wicked message boards, or, if you have something really original or interesting, on this board. Tell your family and friends how much you love Wicked. Get them into it too.
I'm one of the few people I know that DOES really like Winnie Holzman's book. I also love her book for Birds of Paradise. I wish all of the Wicked people would use Wicked as a jumping off point. So you like Stephen Schwartz? Try to see a local production of Pippin or Godspell or get a Children of Eden CD. You like Kristin Chenoweth? Get You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown or Steel Pier or Let Yourself Go or Billion Dollar Baby or You Never Know. Try to see Norbert in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, or get a Last Five Years or Thou Shalt Not CD. Pick up a Wild Party or Rent CD for Idina. DO something.
All of my little campers at performing arts camp were OBSESSED with Wicked, and I encouraged that. And then I branched them out. A truly amazing show will make you want to find other truly amazing shows.
Sorry, that was just everything I feel on the subject. Enjoy Wicked!

I wasn't thinking of not going, but the excitement level was dropping rapidly.

From what I gather, I'll get out of it what I put into it. It sounds like it could be a lot like seeing Mamma Mia or Hairspray, neither one was a fantastic, life-altering experience, but I had so much fun at both, that I highly recommend them to anyone just looking to have a good time. And that's all I ask of a musical.

The people who actually hate this show come nowhere near as close as the people who actually love it.
Out of all the people I personally know who have seen it, only two actually hated it.
People can't deny that it has a clever appeal to it. Even the two that hated the show found something to like about it.
For some it may not be their idea of Musical Theatre (Just like my idea is not Movin' Out), but to me, this show is everything Musical Theatre.
I've seen it three times, and plan on going once more before JLT leaves. (I like it even more with her in it.)

I saw Wicked for the first time in March 2004. I thought it was cute and catchy at the most, but that parts of it dragged on and on. I like a couple of the songs, while others I didn't like. I was very impressed by certain aspects of the staging, while others left me less then thrilled. After I saw it, I was pretty content with never seeing it again.

However, in August 2004 I saw Wicked again because the lovely and talented Ms Thompson was going in, and, her being my favorite performer since age 9, I justs had to go see her in it. I still thought pretty much all of the same things. It dragged at times, and the book was a little cheesy. But I enjoyed a little more, most likely because she was in it. I can say today without shame that I like Wicked. Not love, not obsessed, LIKE. I like it, its fine. After May 29th, I will never need to see it again, and I am completely fine with that.

I think we need to move on with our lives and close this Wicked chapter...

it's become a crazy obsession. that's what makes it obnoxious. i think "hate" is the wrong word.

(i personally LOVE it...but i understand those who are OVER the hype)

I saw it last April and it was the last show I saw during my vacation trip to NY. Had just had a great dinner in the Village and the capper was "Wicked". I had by then been listening to the OBCR constantly. And the 2 people that went with me had also. I will say that I was not disappointed. I agree, it is no masterpiece but I think you do get your money's worth. I will see the tour when it hits Denver and I still keep the OBCR in heavy rotation in my CD player and computer at work. (I actually have 2 copies. One I purchased and one that Mr. Schwartz was kind enough to send me signed by him). I say just don't go in with really great expectations and you will have a great time! And I think no matter who is playing Elphaba, the end of Defying Gravity is visually pretty cool!

awwww, i loved wicked! i saw it 3 weeks ago and i thought it was incredible. but that's just my opinion. i can understand people not exactly liking the obsession with it, though. it does get kind of annoying.

I think it's an amazing show. I don't particularly like a few people in the new cast (I saw the OBC so many times) but a few of them are great and worth seeing (JLT). The show is awesome and worth seeing, but I must say that the fanbase has totally turned me off of it. *shrugs*

"There's a butt naked princess, lounging in a bed, calling your name. What exactly didn't you realize? Before our wedding night, pack up some of that dried monkey meat and have the royal cartographer draw you a map of the female body, captain. Maybe then you'll be more inclined to come explore!"

There's nothing really to hate. I just found it a profound disappointment. Had I no expectations from reading the book, I may have enjoyed it more, but I don't think so. I think Winnie Holtzmann's book is actually quite clever (even if it leaves out all the political intrigue and deep discussion of what it truly means to be 'good'). I thought the score was quite generic. And I was not a fan in any way of the design elements.

However, two terrific performances made it an evening that was not too difficult to sit through, even if I wasn't a fan of the material.

I like Wicked and admit it freely. It's one of the best shows that I've seen in that past few years. The only shows that I've liked as much (or more) are Avenue Q, Miss Saigon and Rent.
I'm looking foward to Spelling Bee, it looks clever and I'm excited about it.

The problem is that people are so obsessed with Wicked that they forget there are other shows out there. But weren't people just as crazey about Rent in it's earlier years (and still are)?
