Heathers in SF

Ray of Light Theatre is doing a great production of "Heathers, the Musical" in SF. This is the regional premiere, I believe (at least for our region).

Excellent performances all around and well-done staging. It's a fun show.

...however, I guess I've seen enough 70s-80s high school musicals (Julie Brown's "Homecoming Queen" project in February, Lysistrata Jones in NY a few years ago) - or am getting tired of musicalizations that don't really add anything to the original version.

Still worthwhile to catch, if only to support ROLT.

Wondering what the staging is like. Are they still using the platform with the stairs? I loved the NY production.

I didn't see it in NY, but it sounds similar.
There was a raised walkway upstage with stairs to the stage and a double door at the top of the stairs. The only significant set piece was a 6 seat cafeteria table that split into 2.

I loved it in NY. Very simple staging, but never felt particularly minimal.

I understand there was simple staging in NYC - but the script suggests there should be more elaborate staging. It reads as if the plan was for a BIG broadway show. But, I'm happy for the simple staging, because it gives me hope to be able to produce this show locally in a small space.

Simple staging but effective. That rolling cafeteria table wasn't always totally convincing in all its uses, but it really didn't matter. Easily done by small troupes.

There were also giant mockups of a cafeteria tray, cell phone, gun and monocle suspended above it all, but they weren't needed or referenced.

The only time I recall the cafeteria trays was in the opening scene when the students hold them up to make an arch which the Heathers enter through.

I was referring to the giant tray with steak(?), fries, tots AND mashed potatoes with milk carton suspended to the right of the croquet set ...and how could I have overlooked those giant mallets and balls?

Yes, the prop trays were used to great effect in the Heathers' entrance.

It's a great production, with a terrific central turn from Jessica Quarles. The Martha (Laura Arthur) and the two football players are also really, really good. I had a blast.
