There is a production of Hedwig I really want to see, but I'm not really sure if it's appropriate for me. Can anyone tell me if it is appropriate?
I think it is..the one song that is kinda risque is "Angry Inch" about a botched sex operation..a little, and I mean very little bit, gory/cringe-able, but I dont see why..unless you're very immature, which I doubt you are :), than the show should be fine. I'm 15 and I love it...Have you seen Rocky Horror? It's kinda similar in the transexuality aspect..

No, I haven't yet. But everyone says I should see it.
eep! I've never seen it (for which I constantly kick myself) but judging from the CD, probably not. I don't think I'd take a 12 year old to see that.
If the 12 year old has an open mind, likes rock-theatre music, and can deal with abstract themes, I think they'd be fine. I don't know though, there's something about having a bit more perspective in life, or at least, a bit of life experience that makes Hedwig more palpable. I think you need to have your heart broken at least once to fully feel what Hedwig offers.

I think it depends on the 12 year old. Have you seen the film? If so, then I don't see any reason not to see the stage version, which is a hundred times better than the film anyway. It's a great show.

I am accompanying a production of "Hedwig" in Baltimore right now, and we have had more than a few 12, 13, 14 year olds, etc., come to see it. There is some dirty humor, but it is mostly expressed in double entendres, not explicit cursing. And they did not "cut a lot of stuff for the movie"--it is just in a different format. Frankly, it is a beautiful show that I think everyone should see.

Exactly -- although I don't think HEDWIG is inappropriate for a 12 year-old, I certainly don't think it's ideal. There are many mythological allusions in HEDWIG that inform its serious themes and philosophical conceit; a 12 year-old unfamiliar with the issues explored in the show might get a diluted experience.
There seems to be a lot of unfair criticism against the movie here -- I thought it was a phenomenal adaptation of an inherently theatrical work. The only thing they cut out of the film was a lot of interaction between Hedwig and Yitzak; otherwise, everything is pretty much intact. If anything, the film expands the book and opens up the plot a lot more.

If I were 12, I think I would enjoy HEDWIG, though I wouldn't "get" all of it. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd want to attend it sitting right beside my parents!

I saw the production in Baltimore on the 7th - I'm 15, and I thought it was fantastic. As long as you've got a mind, I don't see a problem.
Thou I feel you need a certain maturity and an open mind to fully appreciate the show, how is Hedwig any worse than what most 12 year olds see on TV????
Hedwig is a much better role model than Mrs Brittany Spears-Federline, and with better hair to boot!
I actually saw HEDWIG last night in Ft. Worth, Texas and I would never take a 12 year old to see it.

get bent.
I saw the Baltimore production again last night and I have a feeling that the 12 year old asking the question would be more respectful than some of the "adults" in attendance last night.
In answer to the question, though, I think the general themes of the show are fine for a 12 year old. I doubt he/she would get some of the more risque jokes and references anyway

I have a confession to make...
I'm the 12 year old.
Yeah, you said you were a 12 year old in your first post when you stated 'me'

Whoops. My bad. But it seems like everyone is thinking I am not the 12 year old.

Yes, we know you're 12. It grows more clear with each post.

Etoile, BE NICE!
If I had a 12-year old, I'd much rather he/she hung out on this board than on far less savory internet sites, so we shouldn't discourage kids from posting here. besides, the theater community needs them: they're the stage door stalkers of tomorrow!
I saw the Baltimore production last night. Jordan Siebert is A-MAH-ZING. Go.

All right, no further reponses are needed. My mom says she's going to think about it. But I'm crossing my fingers...
are you talking about the Baltimore production? They have a post that says 18 and over, but you probably can come with an adult. And it might be awkward to see with a parent as Hedwig gestures giving oral sex to his microphone.
gavroche do you REALLY want to see these oral sex gestures with your parents?
....TALK about awkward...
