re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

She was anything but lackluster in the latest Harry Potter flick, and she was on screen for only a couple of minutes. She made quite a freaky/disturbing impression.

I can't wait to see her as Mrs. Lovett, now.

Back when it was a Sam Mendes project, the names that were mentoned as possible Lovetts were Toni Collette, Emma Thompson, and the front runner, Imelda Staunton. Opposite Russell Crowe as Sweeney.

Back when Russell Crowe had a career.

This is Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton we're talking about - they may make choices that you don't like, but I can't believe that they would even be able to 'de-personalise' the role...

I'm with best12bars, after I saw her in the latest Harry Potter film I really got excited about seeing her portrayal of Lovett.

I have to say that I was not pleased to hear that Helena Bonham Carter was cast in Sweeney as well. After seeing the latest Harry Potter movie, I must also join the camp of very much looking forward to seeing her in Sweeney Todd. She takes a few minutes of screen time in Harry Potter and really stands out! She's fabulously crazy! And, having just finished reading the last HP book, I can't wait to see her in that last film as well!!!

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

I think she'll do well with the character, especially after seeing her in moments of Harry Potter (and a few other films).
I'm sure Sondheim did approve her, but I guess I'll always see her as the wife/or whatever she is of the director, although she is a good actress.

I agree with ray-andallthatjazz86. It's like a movie being created from a book, an author doesn't have complete say in what is going to be portrayed, the director just likes to have the author's opinion.

Regarding Collette and Winslet previously being considered---I'm glad to hear that, just to confirm that my casting ideas weren't too off-base!

I am becoming more and more intrigued by this movie. Only five months away! Seems like they just started filming last week...

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

Why is it so difficult for people to withhold judgement until they have something to go on?? I doubt Sondheim would have approved (no matter what legal right he had to the choice) or Burton would have allowed someone who couldn't do the part to play Mrs. Lovett. Additionally, from what I've heard, Johnny Depp is a bit of a stickler about his choices in parts, so it's unlikely he would have chosen to do it with a sub-par cast. Wait till we've seen something - then, if she sucks, blasts away. But until then, you just sound foolish saying "Oh, what a horrible choice!"

Damn it! The title made me think there would be pictures.

But I second (or third, or fourth) the opinion that, after seeing her in Harry Potter, I'm very excited to see what she will do in Sweeney.

After having seen Hairspray, I feel like Michelle Pfeiffer actually would have been quite an interesting choice for Mrs. Lovett...

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

Yes, but we KNOW Michelle Pfeiffer can't sing. At the least, you can hold up hope for HBC.

(And put me also in the camp of people who think HBC is a talented actress who made an impression with 5 lines in Harry Potter whom I can't wait to see, at least acting wise.)

I'm sure that acting-wise she'll be great, but I'm worried about her singing.

Put me in that group as well.

Wishful thinking, but I was holding out for Miranda Richardson as Mrs. Lovett. And how crazy would it have been if Patti could have done it?!
I know you. I know you. I know you.

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

HBC is quite quirky in real life, so this may well be applied to Mrs L, who I think is likely to be played as quite potty.

Incidentally, I think she was the witch chained to the wall in Sleepy Hollow, wasn't she?

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

Miranda Richardson would have been interesting, but she's not really a singer. She would have been quite evil though. Love that woman.

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

I think that it's funny that people seem surprised that Helena Bonham Carter can do fabulously crazy. If there's anything I automatically associate with her, it's that.

I agree with you, Sweetestsiren. She was Fantastic as the crazy, bipolar, nut, Marla, in Fight Club. I'm eagerly anticipating her performance as Mrs. Lovett in this movie.

I think she'll do pretty well in the role. We know she can act the hell out of it, so at least we'll get half of a good performance.

Plus, is Mrs. Lovett really that dificult to sing? I mean, for this movie, where there are bound to be cuts (I would think WAIT is gone for sure) and the fact she only has to sing it once in a studio (where computers can help her a bit), I'm not too worried about her singning.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

PRECISELY!!! She wouldn't have been my first choice for the role, but I get so sick of people judging performances before they've seen one second of the film!!!

I'm with jason -- I'll reserve judgement until I see the finished product.

re: Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett

I'm pleased to see the "wait until you've c**king SEEN it before deciding if it's good or not!" mindset prevailing. Srsly now. If it all turns out to be a terrible mistake *after* we've seen it, then we'll concede to the naysayers. But only AFTER seeing it, and only if it turns out bad. Let's remaining optimistic desu! ^_^

"woops my mistake. But she was the witch in Big Fish, and that's pretty close."

No, she played the elderly woman I think she was piano teacher whose house was off center and Ewan's character and the giant came and fixed it for her.

Unlike most, I was very interested in seeing Helena as Lovett just as much as I'm interested in seeing Johnny as Sweeney and Alan as The Judge, but like most of you I'm even more excited and interested to see her as Lovett after seeing Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix. Man she was great and she had such a great evil creepy laugh.
