A friend of mine did cancellation line a few nights ago and he was able to get rear orchestra for $189. Apparently they sell cancellation tickets as they come in, not at any specific time. He got to the box office around 2 o'clock, was the second in the cancellation line and waited about an hour before the seat came available.

After work today I went to the box office to enquire about SRO. The guy in front of me asked questions on SRO and unfortunately they didn't have any that evening. I then asked for cancellation and box office told me they'll sell them if they have any. At that point in time (5:30pm) no one was in the cancellation line. I decided to go to the Marriott Marquis to use the bathroom to prepare myself for a 2 hour wait. I then came back to the box office at 5:45pm and luckily I was first person on cancellation line. They let me wait inside the box office and by 6pm they offered me a cancellation ticket for $189. Rear orch row S (2nd to last row but still full view.)

When I was inside the theater, roughly 4-5 people were doing SRO, which I believe is the creative team & producers. Here's a pic of one of them (Scott Rudin I think) during intermission:

On the left rear orch side, there was an official photographer there taking photos so again, no room for SRO at least for this performance.

My guess is during previews, Hello Dolly does have a cancellation line (rear orch) but SRO seems to vary on the performance as I've read on the other thread there were people who scored an SRO ticket.

BTW, the ushers were very strict about smartphone cameras during the performance and curtain call! Wow! BEfore the show and during intermission, smartphone pix were ok.

Anyone have experience with this recently? How early do I need to get there/how many tickets can one get? I'd be looking for 3, do I need all three there?

Just to share my experience today. Got in the line after the Great Comet matinee, so around 5:10pm. About 8 people in front. Slowly but surely tickets started to come available and at 6pm I got a ticket, centre orchestra. $229.

My first exposure to Dolly (and Bette). Feeling lucky!

Also, they let us wait inside which was great!

Figured I would give my update! I did this yesterday, and we got there at around 5:30, and there were 8 people on line. About 5 minutes after I got there, they gave out two tickets. At around 6, they gave out two more, and at 6:20, they gave out a single, $189 for mezzanine (a great seat), but we stayed in line so that my mom could also get a seat, and at around 7:40 two more became open, also at $189, and we took one of those as well. I think a few more of the people behind us got in as well, as we saw them in the theatre. I would recommend it! A great show, and a great line (you get to wait inside until 7!).

Wow!  Thanks for this update.   Seems it's easier to get cancellation tickets to see Bette than Hugh Jackman.

Back during THE BOY FROM OZ, I remember doing the cancellation line and not getting my ticket until 7:30pm for an 8pm performance.   I had been in line since 3pm and still in shorts and flip flops.  Lucky I was staying at The Paramount Hotel on W. 46th Street so I was able to dash and shower and dress appropriately in theater garb and make it on time.  I had a box seat next to the stage which was full view and a perfect bird's eye view to see Hugh's interactions with the audience (like his exchange with the late arrivals).  At my performance he danced with Rue McLalahan in the Orchestra Center aisle, celebrated a stagehand's birthday (made her try Vegemite) and during the Act 2 opener (the nightclub scene) announced that Elvis Costello was in the audience so he persuaded him on stage and Costello performed with the onstage band for an impromptu jam session.  That was just at my performance and validates why countless people kept going back to see him and the show over and over again, including Barbara Cook and Barbara Walters.  Each performance was literally an event.
