I guess you're not aspoor as you made yourself out to be. Despite all that whining about Scott Rudin making Bette inaccessible to people like you, you can afford a ticket to see herafter all and still have enough money left over to see Bernadette too. I'm overjoyedfor yoursudden and new found wealth."
That was obviously sarcasm. Of course I can't afford to see them both. I can't afford to see one of them. Haha. But the people who did tell me that Bernadette was better said Bernadette seemed to be playing the character, and Bette seemed to just be playing herself. They also said Bernadette's emotional moments in the show seemed more genuine.

No question. Hello, Dolly! I saw it with both Bette and Bernadette and they both brought different but fantastic takes on Dolly. Having said that, seeing it with Bette will be more of an event, but you can likely get cheaper, better seats with Bernadette.
Case in point, I paid $400 to see Bette in November (RIGHT ORCHESTRA Row J). That’s the most I’ve ever paid for a ticket. In comparison, I bought my ticket for the show with Bernadette in February two hours before showtime via TKTS. I paid $86.50 for Center Orchestra, Row G, middle of Row.

Apart from the costumes and staging and the excitement of seeing Bette Midler which lasted about 3 and a half minutes I hated every minute of Hello Dolly.
Mean Girls is fun, but the movie is way better.
Replenish your soul and go see The Bands Visit or Once on this Island instead.

I'm actually male. If you don't like the opinion then take it up with the people who said it. The person who started this topic asked a question and I answered. Sue me.

You know . That’s not a bad idea. Someone should sue you for libel. You have lied here and on at least 2 other threads.

I haven't seen Bernadette, there is no way I could sit through the show again, but Midler did just play Midler. There was no characterisation there what so ever.

Of course Bette plays herself- all the great stars have personas that they play- especially the Divine Miss M- one of the classic entertainers of all time- up there with all the greats. Streisand always plays Streisand- John Wayne played John Wayne- Hepburn played....well, you get the picture. I loved Bette in Dolly- and expected her infuse her own persona into the role- which she did. Bernadette plays it, from what I hear, more as an acting role and stays truer to the classic Dolly characterization- so be it- both are valid choices- but let;s face it- a huge musical comedy star like Bette Midler is going to bust the box office- and of course, she did- and she will do it again soon.

That's all well and good and I agree to a certain extent, only I didn't pay to see that I paid to see her play a character, something that she failed to do.
It does boil down to your point really though I guess. If you paid to see Bette Midler you'd have walked away happy. If you paid to see Hello Dolly you'd have been disappointed. I walked away disappointed. I also didn't like the show itself either so I walked away double disappointed.
I'm not saying either thing were 'bad' as such, just that 'I' didn't like them.

Okay so we're acknowledging that some felt that Bette played herself. Cool. So no, i have not lied about anything because clearly others felt the same way my friends did. There's no issue here.

That production is a top notch revival a show that's book is past its prime. Mean Girls is a great updated version of the movie. Both have stellar casts and both feel like you are getting your $$$ worth (full sets, costumes etc.). I'm a millennial so I enjoyed Mean Girls a lot more and would recommend that.

You keep going on and on about something you have not seen. For the record.. Carol played herself ( beautifully ). So did Pearl. And Ethel did as well. This is part of what makes the role so wonderful and why the audiences eat it up. I actually have seen all of them in it. Bernadette is lovely in the role but probably my least favorite Dolly. Bette brings herself to the role as the other previous successful Dolly's have done. And she is spectacular in it. For me.. and for many...WORTH EVERTY PENNY. If your going to be spewing opinions on something you have not seen and just based on what your "friends" say.... then at least get better friends. I respect anyones different opinion that has actually seen the show. You are not a very good troll.

Your problem was people putting Bette in second place because of the perception she was playing herself. It has nothing to do with who or what said it, you have a problem with the actual perception of that idea. You're arguing that an actress playing herself in this role shouldn't be negated or penalized for doing so and that's completely fine. But that's not the topic. I answered the OP's question based on the word of mouth of people I know who have seen the show. Whether rightfully or wrongfully, you can make that decision. But don't debase the argument by calling people names when the issue you have is something out of my control.

Oh honey. It is time for you to step away from the computer. You just keep digging yourself further and further into your tormented hole Maybe get one of those "friends" to take you out and get some air. GO! Have a nice weekend. It will do you good. Really. Please.

Set design. Dolly.
Lump in the throat moments. Dolly.
Score. Dolly.
The sound of the steel steps being lifted on the train as it departs. Dolly.
Overture. Dolly.
Dancing. Dolly.
The scroll of painted street scenes leading to Harmonia Gardens. Dolly.

I don't post that much, but I had to this time. Please shut up for once. You're getting into stupid fights with people. Use your time on something more productive honestly. It's so annoying to open a thread and see half of it is just arguments with you in the center.
And to the OP, go see Dolly!. Mean Girls is my guilty pleasures, but Dolly! is one of the best things I have seen in years. I've seen all three Dollys, and I preferred Bernadette and Donna over Bette (I think because I just love the two of them, so I'm biased), but the shear moments of seeing Bette onstage and having the audience eat out of the palm of her hand made me fall in love with the show. So if you get a chance to see it with Bette, do it, but if you just want to see the show and pay a little less, then see it with Bernadette. But Bette will be an experience you will remember for years to come.

I haven’t seen either, but from someone who was looking at similar options...
“Mean Girls” will probably still be on Broadway a year from now, whereas “Hello, Dolly!” closes its Broadway run at the end of this August. So, unless you want to see the “Hello, Dolly!” National Tour with Betty Buckley, and I can’t imagine “Mean Girls” would be that much different on Broadway than it will be on tour, I’d recommend “Hello, Dolly!” for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to see either Bernadette or Bette in the starring role.
And as much as I’ve read on this forum from a hundred different opinions, Bernadette was better, nailed the emotional aspects of it, whereas one person put it “Bette was playing Bette playing Dolly”.
P.S. I’m seeing both Bernadette and Bette. Couldn’t not see both entertainment legends.
