I usually get to see one Broadway show a year and my mom promised me I'd get to pick one, and "Sunday" is my absolute favorite show. So I've been bugging her about it since it was announced that it was coming back to Broadway and since my family has absolutely no appreciation for Broadway, my mom thinks it doesn't matter that the show I love and want to see is closing. She decides, however, to try and get tickets literally the day before it closes (today). Obviously, it's sold out.
I'm pissed beyond words and I honestly don't give a s**t about any other show right now, so I need your help because I figure you all know more about Broadway than my mom does, who thinks that the only great shows on earth are Phantom of the Opera and Jersey Boys. So I would appreciate it if any of you had a suggestion for a show that would (hopefully) make up for the fact that I will probably never see Sunday in the Park With George. Thanks in advance.
Is this the only weekend you can see a show? If not, why not wait a little while to see one so this doesn't color the show you DO get to see?
(I'm not being 'smart' ~ I just know how my mood and attitude will color my experience of something and if I go into it thinking "I only wanted to see..." then obviously I will hate whatever I'm seeing. And I don't think that's really fair to the other show.)

If this IS the only weekend you can see something, I second LePetiteFromage's suggestions of Gypsy or In The Heights.
But as I said before, I have a feeling your mood and attitude will color whatever you see no matter how wonderful it is, and I'd wait if possible. Then see one of the two mentioned.

OK, cool. I know I'm that way... I also often have to be careful about the show I see immediately after a show I love closes so I'm not unfair to that one. I usually end up choosing something I've seen or something I know going in I probably won't like just to get it over with. LOL. (My sister is the same way, which is why I'm so glad we managed to find tickeets to Wicked when she and my parents are up here...I didn't want her pouting through Gypsy. Now she can see both.)
I do think either Gypsy or In The Heights would be a good choice.

Have you seen both? The thing is, if I did end up seeing Gypsy (which I'm sort of leaning towards) and Patti's understudy went on, I think I'd have a panic attack. Not literally, but I'd feel like those crazy people outside of Grey Gardens went Christine Ebersole was out.
Patti won't be out, she has been out once. The only time she is out is when she is deathly sick or the world is coming to an end.
But In The Heights is amazing, I've seen it fie times, it's wonderful! Gypsy is as well
You should try the cancelation line for Sunday in the Park With George. My friend got in that way the other day, you may have to do a lot of waiting but you could get great seats that way. I am seeing it today! I hope you get to see it!
I don't live in New York, so I don't think that would work out. Thank you though. That's good about Patti, too. Isn't it true that she never missed a performance of Sweeney Todd?
I have seen both. They're very different. I know I will get crucified for this, but I'd be more upset if Laura was out of Gypsy. For me, she is the reason to see the show. I'd actually love seeing the understudy for Rose ~ one thing that makes me glad about being in NYC so if someone knows in advance and posts on here I can go and get a ticket! :)
(I don't know about illnesses, but she did miss for vacation during Sweeney.)
