Maybe this isn't news but I didn't see it on the boards. Playbill has an article.

"The world premiere pre-Broadway production will play an out-of-town tryout engagement, Sept. 26-Oct. 22 at the Colonial Theatre as part of the Broadway Across America – Boston series. The show will then begin previews on Broadway in late November and open in early December at a theatre to be announced."

What happened to San Francisco? Are they afraid to come here after "The Mambo Kings" and "Lestat"?

Didn't Norbert Leo Butz do a workshop recording of this production a while back?

So excited. Except, I don't get opening in Boston. Its so close to NYC that it seems like they will get teh same audience they would in NYC.

When they first announced this show, it was going to try out in SF. Guess they got scared.

Not sure about Norbert, but I think Will Chase did a workshop of this as well. I am very excited about this show. I may have to make the drive up to Boston to see it before it comes to bway.

Norbert Leo Butz, Sherie Rene Scott, Julia Murney, and Jen colella were part of a demo of it thats floating around, it seemed pretty informal though.

I'm really excited for this. Has cast been announced?

Boston used to be a pretty popular out of town try out spot. I know the revival of Bells Are Ringing with Faith Prince played there before it played Broadway.

Boston was one of main out-of-town tryout cities for pre-broadway tours for well over a half century and they used to have local critics like Elliott Norton and Kevin Kelly who were some of the most respected in the business. In fact, Norton -- after whom Boston's theatre awards are named -- was considered so knowledgable that producers and creative teams would regularly arrange meetings with him (after he'd reviewed the show) to pick his brain as to how to fix their shows before having to face the New York critics (and there are many stories of suggestions he made that resulted in shows that were in trouble becoming hits). Boston's influence on Broadway has reduced over the years as fewer and fewer shows do pre-NYC engagements there, but at one time it was the most important stop on the tour.

The cast hasn't officially been announced yet but I do know one longtime current Broadway star who's been cast and I'm very excited about that! :)

I was wondering when someone was going to mention Boston's long history as a pre-Broadway spot, in regard to RentBoy's post. Leave it to Margo!

I think this show is a great idea. Well, it certainly has pontential. The lady's got pontential...

Gah, I always hear that whenever I say "pontential".

I don't know...
I adore this movie...
It's in my top five (hardy har)...
And sometimes I wonder about turning things into musicals...
As much as I love my musicals...
Do you all know what I mean?

Well it was originally a book...How do you feel about books to musicals?

I was so hoping that SF would turn into a kind of Boston theater town. I was also looking forward to this show as well, having liked the movie very much.

Now...who is this "longtime current broadway star" you are hinting at erinrebecca? It's not nice to tease....

jimnysf - you seem to forget "Sweet Charity" and "Seussical", which the Boston critics nearly closed out of town.

"Charity" was also originally scheduled for SF when Marissa Tomei was attached to it but ended up going to Boston instead.
I have seen a few Boston tryouts myself: "A Little Night Music" at the Colonial, "Gypsy" (Tyne Daly) at the Wang, "Gypsy"(Angela) at the Shubert. I've been lucky enough to live in NYC, Boston and San Francisco.

I think I still have the Marissa Tomei flyer, jimmysf! I'll be seeing the tour when it comes through ( San Jose, I think)instead now. I enjoyed it in NY April of this year, but really wanted to see it pre-Broadway, as originally scheduled.
