Honeymoon in Vegas not able to find a theatre?!
#1Honeymoon in Vegas not able to find a theatre?!
Posted: 10/19/13 at 7:24amJust read somewhere that producers want to bring Honeymoon in Vegas but there are no available theatres... Is every theatre seriously booked? What's going into the Palace??

playbill's Real Estate page shows 3 houses that are currently or soon to be open
The Marquis, the Palace and Circle in the Square.
The first 2 are huge barns that may be too big for the show, and the last doesn't suit the production
And maybe something is known to be going into the first two that hasn't been announced

Posted: 10/19/13 at 8:16pmThe Papermill seats about 1200, the Marquis depending on configuration , a bit over 1500, it may be more. However, I agree, the Marquis would be a perfect fit.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 8:38pmIs this a big production? I can't really tell just by looking at the photos and videos.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 9:05pmI'd say it's a moderate musical. Pretty standard size. It's not Les Miz or anything, but if Finian's Rainbow can play the St. James, why can't this play the Marquis?

Posted: 10/19/13 at 9:28pmI wouldn't be surprised if the Neil Simon was open after Christmas. That could be an option as well.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 9:58pm^ I don't think that had to do with the theatre. I think even in a small or mid-sized house it would have tanked.

I agree to an extent, bwayphreak. I do think Honeymoon in Vegas has an advantage in the name-it's recognizable from the film. Tony Danza's participation may help it as well.
I think the Marquis would be ideal for it.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 10:05pmHaven't we learned that name recognition does nothing to help sales? Sooooo many film-to-musical flops. And the hits of the past few seasons? All original musicals.

NEWSIES? - movie
ONCE? - movie
MATILDA? - book/movie (though not a basis)
KINKY BOOTS? - movie
A CHRISTMAS STORY - movie
Where are these original musical "hits" you speak of?
MORMON and NEXT TO NORMAL are the only two that come to mind.

Once, Matilda, Kinky Boots, and Newsies are all film-to-musical successes and arguably the biggest shows on Broadway from the past two seasons.

^ Love it when that happens.
You could also lump BRING IT ON in there, but other than it getting a nom for Best Musical I wouldn't really call it a hit.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 10:16pmI personally loved Ghost, but I know a lot of people on here didn't. Anyway's I'm pretty sure The Bodyguard (Also, adapted from a film) has The Marquis on hold and they are going to start renovations on it soon for an opening Mid Next Year.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 10:20pmHoneymoon in Vegas needs a slightly larger cast. 2 show girls does not a Vegas act make. It is a Musical that wants so bad to be a Broadway Show. Hopefully they will get the Marquis and throw some more money into it. I could see it being a success.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 10:33pmHaven't there been plans for renovating the Marquis for awhile? I though after Evita they were going to renovate, but then Jekyll & Hyde switched from the Richard Rogers to the Marquis, and the renovations never happened...

Posted: 10/19/13 at 11:29pmI agree with bwayphreak234, the Neil Simon could very well be available after the New Year as could the Broadway.

Memphis
Drowsy Chaperone
Book of Mormon - the biggest hit on Broadway in awhile
Spring Awakening
Spelling Bee
I'm just saying just because it's a movie or a recognizable name doesn't mean it's going to be a hit. Look at "Breakfast at Tiffany's" or "Legally Blonde" or heck even "Big Fish."
#20Honeymoon in Vegas not able to find a theatre?!
Posted: 10/20/13 at 3:56amI would say Mormon is the only slam dunk on that list. Spring Awakening isn't wholly original.

Very little is ENTIRELY original. It's not based on a hit film which is the point being made here.
And yes, the Marq. is going to be closed for renovations (after Heather Headly's gig?).

Posted: 10/20/13 at 9:03amWhat kind of renovations are happening? Aesthetic?
#23Honeymoon in Vegas not able to find a theatre?!
Posted: 10/20/13 at 10:44amI don't know, but I think I heard it was expected to take 8 or 9 months....and then to expect BodyGuard to take the theater. (The info is from another poster here -- but I don't remember who? AEA? ACL? I think it's one of them.)

Posted: 10/21/13 at 7:37amI agree with Snafu that the cast should be upsized from it's current 18, and there should be at least four showgirls.
