"Jerby, were you always this intense about responding or is it just lately?"
He's always this intense, he's just been MIA lately.
"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer
"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher
Hey--if you can't take the heat, why start debates? And, don't take it personal. I just vehemently disagree with your opinion. No need to get upset about it. I'm certainly not.
And again, I say that trying to have a discussion about this in a vacuum is pointless. It's also like you start these threads to gain confirmation in what you already believe. Anytime someone brings in an opposing view, you take issue.

I can surely think of a few Broadway singers that I wouldn't mind seeing in a straight play, such as "Take Me Out".

I confess I'd rather have seen and heard Patrick Wilson singing the show rather that the largely straigt acting role he did for the comedy Barefoot in the Park. For me it was a bit of a letdown because I know what that vocal instrument he has is capable of and longed to hear it, as that quality in singing is rare.
Did I misread this? It seems that you were "letdown" that he didn't sing in Barefoot In The Park and that you "longed to hear it". So you DID know that it was a non singing role, but you were still "let down"? Hmmm...
That happened after I was in the seat for the show, Sueleen. So how would I know ahead of time when I purchased the ticket. Read carefully.
Someone could come on here and say they saw a favorite singer perform a straight play and they were so wrapped up in the performance they forgot all about their other abilities. Or they prefer them as a dramatic actor. It doesn't matter to me. There's no right answer. It's just a discussion.
I'd like to see Matthew Morrison do a serious drama though he's about my favorite male singer.
So, you feel that the problem occurs when the audience member doesn't realize that they are seeing a play--that they thought they had purchased a ticket to a musical?
I don't mind, actually. It's a great way to show off their acting strengths that we usually don't see in them. Maybe you are going to the wrong musicals if you don't see people using their acting ability. What musicals have you seen where people have not used their acting talents?
I think a good point was partially raised earlier that it may be the particular play that has been chosen. Or I'd add the quality of the production itself.
If you get bored and your mind starts to wander, you may start missing their other abilities.
It's possible also that you're just so excited about the singing voice they have, and there's the person, and you know they can do it, that that may be a part of it. I felt that way about Rebecca Luker and then she did sing and it was great. I believe Isherwood actually brought this subject up in his review for Indian Blood, or one of the reviewers did, that you are longing for her to sing and the playwright and director saw to it that the audience was not disappointed.
Speaking strictly from an audience perspective,I think it would be interesting to see a perfomer I think has a great voice act in a play, just to see them in a different light.
What if the hokey pokey really IS what it's all about?
It's good to see these actors in more than just Broadway plays and such. It's like with people with singing careers, they can't always depend to always have a singing career, they have to be versitile in different things. Although, I never saw Jon Bon Jovi in a Broadway play yet. It would be interesting to see how he would do. Updated On: 8/28/06 at 09:51 AM
I think it is fantastic. It helps to show off all of their abilities. Seeing Angela Christian in Anais Nin was amazing. She is such a great actress, and although I love hearing her sing, it was awesome to see her really become this character onstage.
...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...
