but doesn't it matter to anyone here that Louise is an actual famous icon of the 20th century, who I'm pretty sure was white.
Me, girl, me. I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight thinking about so-called minorities taking roles that belong to white peoplle.
Gypsy is for white people! If non-white people want to do a show soi bad, they should write their own!

My only objection in this whole production is the fact that it's based on real people, even then I'm not that bothered by it considering how much of the story is exaggerated. But other than that, I mean it's going to be absolutely amazing because Leslie Uggams is a theatrical institution.
Also can we please correct the spelling of her name in the title of the thread, it's bad enough with the Snyder comments about her race, can we at least spell her name right?

White actors are the last group it's okay to discriminate against. I'm sort of paraphrasing Mr Roxy, here, but what he said really makes you think.

WTF …. is this thread for real ????????

I just don't like people coming to this country and taking white actors' jobs.

Even just strictly from a business standpoint.
I never realized before that I could watch a show in which race is not an issue AND SIMPLY NOT CARE IF ROSE OR FDR ARE PLAYED BY BLACK ACTORS!!!
I never knew I could do that!
THANK YOU!!!

"the original production of Side Show was of the Hilton twins (which took huge liberties with the timeline of their lives, and switched which twin was on which side"
I KNEW there was a reason I hated that show. I kept thinking "Am I looking in a mirror? They're switched around!" It also didn't show their lives after they quit show biz when they worked as a cashier and bagger in a grocery store.
OMG!!!!
Could Side Show work with one white actress and one black actress?
Some people...

It's going to be very awkward when Leslie sings "But some people ain't me."
Corny to go back to the actual topic, I know -- but doesn't it matter to anyone here that Louise is an actual famous icon of the 20th century, who I'm pretty sure was white.
Someone, yours is the only argument against a black Rose that makes any sense to me. But I'm 60 and barely recall Gypsy Rose Lee on the TONIGHT show when I was a kid. I don't think today's audiences are really thinking of her when they see the show.
So change the "Orpheum Circuit" to the Apollo and even change the stage name that Louise is given, if you like. Otherwise, I see no reason the show wouldn't work with a central family that is African-American. Certainly there was black burlesque just as there was white.
Gaveston, you wouldn't have to change "Orpheum Circuit". Outside of theater fans and historians, people aren't going to know who was allowed to play what houses.
Such a nice troll thread. Wake me up when ANNIE opens in December.

If they want the audience to notice she's black they should change it to the Chitlin Circuit, if they don't want the audience to notice she's black -- which most people won't because we're in the post-racism era -- they should keep Orpheum Circuit.
"Gypsy is for white people! If non-white people want to do a show so bad, they should write their own!"
Bet you just loved Audra in "110 In The Shade". Btw, I think Tonya Pinkins would make a great matinee Rose but I hear once she's free from HOLLER she's touring in EVITA.
Why aren't people pissed off that there are almost never any REAL Gypsies cast in this show?

I will boycott the show until Rose McGowan or Rose Byrne have children. Then I will only see them in it.
Either Rose Nylund plays it or I'm not going.
Or is she not old enough yet?
Lena Horne would have been spectacular in Gypsy.

SPECTACULAR.

Tonya Pinkins can play Evita all she wants, but that's different. Evita wasn't a real person.

Thank God it's not Meryl Streep in the role. Can you imagine Streep playing any real person? She needs to stick with the fictional characters like Master Class, Iron Lady and Julie & Julia.
