To answer the original question with an unpopular opinion: these shows were bad.
”Cabaret” is a near-perfect show which had a definitive revival (twice!) on Broadway within memory for many NYC audiences; this production was both garish and paled by comparison.
”Sunset” may have been better when the director was around to keep it strictly within his vision, but I didn’t see it until May…and actors mugging for cheap laughs on camera, plus the deadly pacing while nobody even looked at each other, made it one of my least favorite nights in the theater ever. Every single character in the show seemed absolutely miserable, except for Norma’s moment at the studio and Joe during the Act 2 opening.
Neither had remotely enough bridge-and-tunnel/group sales audience appeal to achieve the kind of lasting success that leads to recoupment.
Plus, the current administration is utterly tanking international tourism with this tariff nonsense, which helps none of us.

Nicole is also someone ALW has had a longterm professional relationship and she owes a lot of her musical theatre work to him. Even if they had had a falling out at some point surrounding CATS, that connection can't hurt.
“A lot of her musical theatre work”? She’s done CATS, this production of Sunset, and Rent at the Hollywood Bowl. There’s not a whole “lot” of said work to begin with.
Speaking of the falling out, no wonder she was supposedly in tears while performing the version of Memory in this article - who wouldn’t be, knowing they’d completely screwed it up?
And seeing her writhing like that is very reminiscent of her Norma. Is that the extent of her acting skills?
Get ready to cover your ears.

Her "memory" is a major misfire. She is screeching on those high notes and her body movement and gestures are exactly the same as Norma's in Sunset Blvd. Could she be cast in another musical lead role? Her ability to project character seems extremely limited to rock concert style performing. Even though it worked for Sunset, I don't think it works for Cats or most other shows.
Everyone seems to forget Sunset Blvd has lost money in several productions. The story does not appeal to a wide audience, even the movie never had wide, wide appeal. It is a tragic downbeat story about three sadly deluded people -- Norma, Max and Joe. The score has three strong solos, two for Norma, one for Joe, but the ensemble numbers don't invade the story, they stand outside the world of the mansion, as does Betty - so they seem like they are from a different musical score in some ways.
True, she made the show work with her amazing vocals, but it was never going to be the big sellout with premium priced tickets making up the box office necessary to pay back costs. This production cannot tour without her, so it had a limited chance of recovering its costs.
Perhaps the days of money making revivals with full casts and full orchestras are over. That is very sad, but seems to be the case. I am so glad I experienced Broadway theatre when the orchestras were all over 20, the cast size was always above 35, and the sets, lighting, costumes were so professional and artistically first class. Like many things in the current world, those golden days seem to be over with.
