Kennedy Center Honors
 Feb 28 2026, 11:11:51 AM

This move effectively kills the Kennedy Center Honors.  The Kennedy family should demand their name be removed.  Lincoln Center should institute its own Arts Honors Award and restore a classy and respected honor to its rightful place.

new DIRTY DANCING stage musical aimed for Broadway. WHY?
 Feb 23 2026, 06:35:27 PM

It worked as a popular film, but that does not qualify it for stage adaptation. So much of the film was intimate close ups  -- that won't work in a 1600 seat house. The movie does not need to be a stage musical -- nothing screams out demanding it be musicalized. The story lacks strong characters or interesting plot elements; the entire emphasis will be on the dance which cannot be duplicated since so much of it was faked with clever edits and cuts.

Another WHY music

David Henry Hwang is revising FLOWER DRUM SONG again for East West Players
 Feb 18 2026, 05:09:57 PM

I wish he would restore CY Lee's original story line about the three women in Ta's life, especially the Helen Chao story. The rewrite he did trivialized the generational story of immigrants and their second generation American born children and how difficult it is to maintain traditions and culture.

Who pays for the touring shows that lost bookings?
 Feb 2 2026, 03:45:28 PM

Who will reimburse those touring companies for the lost bookings?  Does this break the contract with whoever runs the subscription series?

Trump takeover of DC
 Feb 1 2026, 08:09:20 PM

Will Trump remove Kennedy Name in the process?  Tragic.

Flower Drum Song Ballet based on original novel by CY Lee
 Jan 29 2026, 12:54:25 PM

In the novel Flower Drum Song by CY Lee, Ta had three women -- Linda Low character (different name in novel), Helen, and Mei Lei. Linda was revealed to be a gold digger and eventually dumped Ta and then got killed by another jealous lover in Los Angeles.  Helen Chao was a major part of the center of the story - she had a bad skin condition and feared never finding a man, latched onto Ta after his rejection by Linda Low, she seduced and manipulated him in a desperate attempt to hold

Flower Drum Song Ballet
 Jan 28 2026, 03:27:15 PM

After Love Look Away, there was a ballet in Flower Drum Song on Broadway, but more an Asian dance piece - one can see photos of it in the souvenir program. It was not the jazzy thing in the movie.  Carol Haney did the choreoraphy for the stage version, not Gene Kelly who was just the overall stage director.  I recall it as a very beautiful Chinese ballet showing her distress at losing Wang Ta. Love Look Away and the ballet were the first musical numbers in the second act.&

THELMA & LOUISE Musical in the Works
 Jan 20 2026, 02:40:21 PM

I agree -- it is not a good subject for a musical. What about these women needs to sing?  It is an action story, not a good stage story.

Movie Adaptions that Got Stuck Out-of-Town
 Jan 17 2026, 09:40:27 PM

Roman Holiday had good sets, nice cast, just had no reason for being a musical since it really has no plot, just incidents. It had no energy on stage, and the cast was trying very hard. Not offensive, just no life.

TRUMP RENAME" DONALD J TRUMP KENNEDY CENTER
 Dec 18 2025, 01:57:38 PM

I hope Actors Equity and IATSE and the opera, symphony, and ballet company refuse to perform there any more. The Kennedy Center had class.  Renaming it after himself destroys any cultural class this place had. Beyond desecration.

2026/2027 Producers Revival?
 Dec 17 2025, 01:29:56 PM

I doubt Producers would do that well at the box office these days. The original only made $$ with Lane and Broderick. The tour did very poorly around the country. Also, not sure in the age of MAGA that the NAZI stuff would play as funny.

Monte Cristo Musical to premiere at Off-Broadway's York Theatre Spring 2026
 Dec 12 2025, 02:48:57 PM

Glad to see Sierra, Adam Jacobs, and Norm Lewis in this - stellar cast. It is a wonderful story for a musical, timely as well (even though a classic story set in the past, revenge seems to be in the air these days).  Looking forward to see Jacobs in another leading role, especially a dramatic role. Always enjoy Sierra and Norm.

Trump calls it the Trump Kennedy Center
 Dec 5 2025, 03:19:56 PM

Trump said, again, it is the Trump Kennedy Center.  Tragic.

How Bad Will the Kennedy Center Honors Be
 Dec 3 2025, 09:02:31 PM

Trump and the First Lady just left for Mara-Lago, so they won't be in DC this weekend.  Isn't he supposed to host this Gala including the television show on CBS?

Broadway Grosses: Week - Baker Street
 Nov 19 2025, 02:13:55 PM

I remember the Baker Street ad, big gross the first week, a little less the second week, then down the grosses went. Same thing happened to Mr. President in 1962, Mary Martin in Jennie 1963, Girl Who Came to Supper in 1963.  Word of mouth eventually kicks in, and much faster these internet days when we don;t have to wait for the critics, online warnings are all over the place.

Back To The Future Australia Flops
 Nov 14 2025, 07:47:26 PM

Back to the Future is not a very good show - it was a fun movie, but not a good source for a Broadway musical. The story does not sing. It is essentially a satirical comedy gently mocking the 1950s of his parents' youth. Since neither of his parents were vanilla middle class, any pastiche music would have to satirize that genre, but the score tried to play it sincere. Further the whole attraction of youthful teenage mom could not be musicalized, can't add emotion to that tasteful

Jackie Siegel Defends Kristin Chenoweth After Charlie Kirk Comment
 Oct 27 2025, 07:33:35 PM

This will give a lot of theatergoers the perfect reason not too see this show and support greed, homophobia, and racism.

4 big musicals for 25/26
 Oct 25 2025, 02:32:13 PM

Has Dolly Parton's recent health issues put a hold on her musical bio coming in this season?

ATG’s new rush policy in San Francisco for Suffs
 Oct 25 2025, 02:29:53 PM

Offering Rush Tickets day of show is an excellent policy since the theatre for Shucked, which also offered rush tickets, was close to 50% empty for almost every performance. Even Les Miz touring production was offering Rush tickets since it was not even close to sell out.  These shows are just not selling across the country because some of the shows are mediocre (Some Like It Hot, Mrs Doubtfire), the Trump economy is down, younger people are not regular theatergoers or opera goers or sym

 Oct 23 2025, 05:05:20 PM

Great to see the Society for Directors and Choreographers honor Bartlett Sher for so many wonderful and innovative productions, and for his leadership in the American Theatre. Bravo, Bart!
