How do they decide what cast albums get parental advisory labels? #1

So, I was walking passed a display of copies of The Next To Normal cast recording and I noticed something. I noticed that it didn't have a parental advisory sticker on it. I thought, that if an album, regardless of the type of music, has swearing on it, that they have to put that sticker on there. Which is why shows like Billy Elliot and Avenue Q have them on theirs.

Is something like this optional by the record company? Or how did Next To Normal not have to put one on theirs? I am not trying to say that I think that one should be on there. I am saying that I am used to seeing them on particular albums and Next To Normal's was one that I thought I would see it on.

I've wondered that too. Maybe independent labels don't have to follow the guidelines?

I don't think it's just a matter of cursing -- RENT's cast album doesn't have a Parental Advisory sticker.

N2N most likely did not get it reviewed.

The rating system (Take the MPAA for instance) is by no means nessecary at all. Most producers only get their product rated because some companys do not like to distribute "unrated" products.

N2N does have cursing and suggestive themes that most likely would be givien the "PARENTAL ADVISORY" label.
I dont think at all N2N is a "parental advisory" note worthy show.

So why label yourself like that if you dont have too?

Avenue Q is a different matter, since the material is far more "explicit" than the content in N2N.

There is NO rating system. If the record label feels there should be a label on it, the can affix one. If not, they don't. It is all 100% voluntary.

HEDWIG had one too (both stage version and movie, though not the tribute album).

What I find TRULY irritating is when the recordings and shows THEMSELVES are censored for recording. The best (worst?) example of this would be MJL's THE WILD PARTY cast recording which eliminated all the "f**ks" and took some bite out of the show. I wanna hear crazy blackface Mandy sing "You F***ING whore" not "You whore" before he tries to kill Queenie, dammit!

And "Don't you MESS with me" as Tonya sings just doesn't have the same impact as "Don't you F*** with me!", particularly as it is the CLIMAX of the whole group number. GRRR.

I love when people say that "they didn't talk that way in the 20s" - almost as irritating and WRONG as people who think censoring lyrics is a good idea or will make the show more "accessible". Please. With or without the "f***s", TWP ain't neva gonna be accessible!

I just emailed Tipper Gore about this oversight. Expect N2N to be retricted soon.

Again, no recordings are "Censored." If the producers, writers or other folks involved in Wild Party changed their show no one is to blame but themselves.

JoeKv, you are COMPLETELY wrong!

Tell that to Phil Ramone and MTI who imposed those changes!

Pshaw!

Pgenre, I couldn't agree more about the edits made in the wild party cast recording. I'd always loved that recording so much and when i ended up doing it in a college production i couldn't get over how those intense moments on the recording would have enhanced a million times over by the simple addition of a f$*k here and there. I guess i'll have to find some time to go down to lincoln center in order to finally here Mandy's " You f$%$&ing WHORE"

do you have any info on why those changes were made?
