Yes, it's an easy walk to the theatre from the train station.

I used to go a lot more often when I lived in South Jersey and had a car. The train ride from New York isn't bad, but you pretty much lose the whole day for a matinee and run the risk of missing that last train out if an evening show is late starting or long, so it has to really be something I want to see for me to go now.

I live about 20 minutes away by car, so we go there a couple of times a season. I highly recommend their productions; their sets and cosutmes rival or exceed Broadway, and their casts almost always include Broadway talent. Some of the highlights over the years: Wizard of Oz (production that moved to MSG (seasonally) for a number of years), Singin' in the Rain, My Fair Lady, Follies, Oliver, Cinderella, Steel Magnolias, and many more. This spring they will put on 1776, followed by The Full Monty.

Although I now live in the city, my family is still in Maplewood (1 stop before Millburn and the Paper Mill Playhouse). I take the train to visit them quite often and it's a very easy commute. The train usually runs every hour or sooner. Millburn is about 40 minutes away from Penn Station. The walk from the station quite short.

Now South Orange (same train line) has build SOPAC (South Orange Performance Arts Center). I'm curious if they will try to create an ambitious season of theater and performance.

Yeah, from what I understood about the train is that it was only a block or so away. That's why I started contemplating going if there was ever something really worth while.

I went there last year to see Kelly Bishop in Steel Magnolias -totally worth it! - and was very impressed how easy it was to get to the theater (took the train and then walked). It's a really nice theater, and I was able to go to the Thursday Matinee and then catch an evening show in the city, so the day wasproductive. re: How many people know of, and are willing to travel to, the Paper Mill P

If you're going from NY on the train, beware of evening performances. The last direct train to NY leaves Millburn at 10:17. Generally, their 7:30 shows get you out in time, but the 8pm Friday and Saturday shows get out too late. After that, you have to change at Hoboken, which adds quite a bit to the travel time. The Millburn station is outdoors, and quite cold and windy in the wintertime. It's a much more pleasant trip during the day for a matinee.

IMHO, the theatre itself is a bit big for non-musicals. Beware of sitting in the balcony, it feels very far from the stage.

I only go out there to see things that rarely come to NY (MACK AND MABEL, CARNIVAL, HAROLD AND MAUDE, FOLLIES - this was before the NY revival). Otherwise, it's not worth the hassle.
