I believe much of it will depend upon the special effects and staging. If it is as visually stunning as the movie, I can't imagine it would flop. Frozen also has something going for it that other Disney musicals didn't have, which is a hit single.

I don't see it being the next Lion King, but I don't think it would do worse than Beauty and the Beast.

Also, Matilda is doing extremely well, and Frozen's fan base is much broader than Matilda's in my opinion.

Up until Frozen, Toy Story 3 was one of the highest grossing films ever as well. But, I doubt if they put it on Broadway right now (4 years after its release) it'd still be a mega hit. I'm not saying it doesn't have the potential to be a hit, I'm just saying that it's unrealistic to think that by the time it hits Broadway, the craze will have not died down a great deal.

Again, Mary Poppins was a hit several decades after it was in the theatres. Whether or not it's still the "big thing," if it's done well a Frozen Musical will sell.

I agree. I don't think the timing of its release should have an effect on its success.

I believe if Frozen was originally released as a Broadway Musical rather than a movie, it would have been a hit. It's a great story with captivating music. I am sure it will be stunning on stage with special effects.

It is obvious it was intended to be a Broadway musical at some point with the Broadway writers and cast in the development of the movie.

Mary Poppins is different. It's a Disney classic. Whether or not Frozen will become a classic is still arguable. Not saying it's not a great film, but I wouldn't compare it at all with Mary Poppins.

Disney was also never even sure if Newsies would ever succeed knowing that the original movie flopped before it actually came to Broadway...

I wonder what people were saying when there were talks of bringing Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King to the stage many years ago?

Beauty and the Beast was met with some enthusiastic anticipation from the general public and vitriol from the Broadway community. It's popularity helped pave the way for future Disney productions, but Broadway resented the Disney invasion (and many still do).

The announcement of The Lion King was mostly met with laughter and ridicule at the very idea...until the world premiere. When the assumptions that it would be a theme park show were proven wrong, the naysayers were oddly silent. The Broadway community was still resistant and after it won Best Musical, it just became another Disney dartboard. It's unceasing popularity only fuels the anti-Disney sentiment that will most likely always be present as long as any Disney show plays Broadway.
