Oh yeah, but for some reason, I don't get as excited about great female vocals than I do about male vocals... When I hear a really good male singer, I go, "Oh wow, that was gorgeous." When I hear a really good female singer, I go, "Oh, thank heavens, her voice isn't irritating."
Basically, I don't like the way female voices sound when belting, and most Broadway music is belted. I think when male singers belt, it really shows off the tone quality of their voices, but when female singers belt, they tend to lose the beauty and uniqueness of their tone quality.
One female singer I really do love is Kelli O'Hara. I love the way Kristin Chenoweth sounds when she sings in a more operatic style, but when she belts, it doesn't do anything for me. I think Rebecca Caine has a gorgeous voice. I'm old-fashioned!
When singers like Sutton Foster and Patti LuPone and Elphaba Of The Month belt, it just sounds like yelling to me. The one exception for me in terms of belting is Susan Egan. I can't get enough of her voice. Granted, there are still PLENTY of female singers whose voices I don't love, but whose acting I really enjoy-- for example, I think Sutton Foster is hilarious.
In my pants, she has burst like the music of angels, the light of the sun! --Marius Pantsmercy
Alice Ripley's singing voice. Her performance in N2N is great, but I thought her voice was AWFUL (though I wonder if it was an off night or something).
^ Listen to the recording, or samples, to find out.
Although I could only truly list Sutton for my performer I dislike, I would like to say this about Patti, since I am surprised at the amount of non-enjoyers.
Seeing Patti in "Gypsy" 5 times is something I absolutely do not regret. Every time was fantastic. It is because she was perfect for the part.
That said, I do think her voice is a little overrated, and I do not think she is an overwhelmingly wonderful actress either. So sometimes I am a little surprised about how grandiosely celebrated she is. I think she is wonderful, but it depends on the role. I thought the revival of "Sweeney Todd" - and not just her part in it - was a big snoozefest.

Matthew Broderick - he just screams bland to me. The only time ive been blown away is him in the video for Master Harold...And the Boys.

Patrick Stewart - His Macbeth was atrocious to me. I just... didn't get it. Patti LuPone - Not that I don't love her, but after seeing her in GYPSY... Kelli O'Hara deserved that Tony. Nathan Lane
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

(I find their voices VERY grating!)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Patti LuPone is not really "well-liked" since so many people list her among performers they don't like.
