I have a feeling more and more people are going to get to see advanced screenings as it gets closer for various reasons. Now I'll have to decide just how much spoilage I want to read, I guess. re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

... not that I have much self-control.

I've heard screenings are actually going to start in the next couple of weeks for Press as well (I assume to target monthly magazines for November).

Frankly, I'm a little surprised the film didn't do any test screenings -- I was completely expecting to hear of test runs that cut one or more numbers to play with length -- but apparently that's not going to be the case!

Amazing to think early reviews will probably be coming out in just a few weeks.

have fun!
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

I'm with ya. Actually, I'm trying to decide how many "reviews" I want to read period. I'm anticipating they are going to range from "OMG it's the best thing I've ever seen" to "they destroyed this, it's a piece of crap" to "I can't believe they made it into a movie in the first place". I'm ready for it all.

re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

I remember posting once that I wouldn't read any reviews, no matter what. Then I realized how unrealistic that was, being my serious lack of self-control. I know I'll be curious. I think I'll make myself wait until after I see the movie to read them, though -- at least the "official" ones. I want to decide for myself. re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

I'm sure there will be all different reviews...and I don't know what ones will be worse. The 'This is the best movie ever' ones, which will kill me before November, or the 'This is an insult to Jonathan' ones which will make me sad.

Hm...oh well. We shall see.

Anyway, that's great! You're so lucky! re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

I actually plan on reading no reviews at all. I don't even want to know if anyone thought the movie was good or not. So I'd like to request that those lucky enough to see an advanced screening to keep all opinions about the movie in their post and not in the subject of a thread.

I want to make my own opinion of it before I hear anything. *shrug*

I don't think the official reviews from major film critics are going to harp that much on the differences between the stage show and film -- save that for the fans.

The critics will however, be quick to judge whether the movie works independently as a film or not. I expect the age of the cast will be a major point of debate.

re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

I'm curious as to whether the critics will go into the movie KNOWING that many of the actors are more than ten years older than their characters. If they do, then they may find reason to harp on the issue. If they don't, I wonder if they'll really find themselves thinking "damn, they look old."

Emcee -- they will know, because the press packets for the film will surely talk at length about the fact that the OBC is mostly recreating their roles 9 years later. There will no doubt also be a statement in the material in which Chris Columbus says something like:

"Only these people could have played these roles on film."

But the critics are certainly free to disagree.

I dont' plan on reading any reviews beforehand... but have fun! That's really exciting you get to go early to see the movie! I doubt that all of the reviewers will know that the actors are 10 years old now, but we'll see. I hope they don't focus on the age of the group too much, but more on the story of RENT.

I didn't even think about that... press packages and things.

I'm somewhat frightened to see the reviews, but at the same time... I really want to see them.

Well, it's certainly been debated to death here, but the bottom line is that characters didn't have a definitive age - it was always assumed but never stated. Mimi was the only one with an "age", so perhaps it won't be too much of a focus in the official reviews.

re: I get to see the Rent Movie Next week!!!

As tempting and horrifyingly taunting as the reviews and spoilers that are sure to come swooshing in within weeks, I still don't know if I want to read them. For the official ones released by press because as others have said, the reviews will surely vary from one extreme to the other and everything in between and I want to create my own opinion of the film without any other imput whatsoever on my mind. I do that way too much, looking up spoilers and early reviews of a movie or upcoming TV episode so by the time it comes out I already have this pre-set subconcious thoughts about the film and I already know everything that happens therefore destroying any element of surprise. And as for spoilers from people lucky enough to get advanced screening tickets, same deal, it'd be awsome to know but I know I'll regret it when I get to see it in November. Anyways, whether my mental willpower will stand to what I've just said, who knows (its not all the strong in this area being the spoiler junkie I am) but we'll see.

Jealousy becomes me.

Oh, and I agree with BroadwayGirl. Don't say anything in your subject line about the movie, so anyone that doesn't want to know (yet or at all) won't. Kay?
