MEF, I don't think people were implying that you were rude when you left the show at intermission (I certainly wasn't). It's just that I don't think I could ever do it and believe me I sat through some sh*te...

I know you didn't. Others insinuated that it was the height of rudeness to leave at intermission.

I agree with who ever said once the show opens than you can come here stating you left at intermission. The show is still in previews, and still has time to fix the kinks.

Personally I think Corine's opinion of SC is more vaid than MEF's because Corine saw the whole show!

Melissa,,,there are lots of sophomoric folks here on this board. Be thankful you spared yourself the misery of act two dear...you did the smart thing. The bad reviews and bad word of mouth that greeted the original Broadway production and its 1980s revival seem likely to return for the "return" of this turkey. It is always fascinating that so many talented people can be involved with something so intensely that they lose perspective. That is why we often get shows put together by "geniuses" that turn out to be awful. I am sorry for this CHARITY family. But, there's no people like Show People and Even with a turkey that you know will fold.........etc." :)
p.s. I am pleased for the people here that saw this show and enjoyed it or parts of it. It says alot about your care and love of theater that you were able to glean moments of joy from this show. There would be lots more theater for all of us to enjoy if there were lots more theatergoers like you sweet folks. :)

MEF- Girl (woops, Sry if you're a guy) I never stated flat out that I love the show. I LOVE the score, and enjoy the movie. That I can say. I've yet to see this production. BUT I do have high hopes for it.

robbiej, I really don't know what you mean. If I have done something to offend you I am truly sorry and it wasn't my intention. If I did something to offend you, please forgive me, it was not my intent and I am always enjoying your writings and stuff and really don't want you displeased with me. Honestly, if I have upset you for any reason, I am genuinely very sorry. PM me if you like and continue being your divine self. :)

WISH,

Many of us are sick and tired of seeing you say the same exact negative things about SC in every frickin' thread. It's so tiring and old now. I think we learned your opinion on this show 6 months ago. We know you don't like it - point blank. You restated your opinion so much on this show, we can't take seeing it anymore.
It's nothing against you, it's just how some of us feel.

munkstrap178-
I wish I was drunk when I saw Blood Brothers, Phantom and Titanic! Perhaps it would have helped me when I had to sit through:

Petula Clark warbling and the Cassidy brothers "emoting" in Blood Brothers with one of the worst books on stage.

Watching a 12 inch remote controlled ship on a bare stage "simulate" the Titanic running into the iceberg (first national tour - not a community or school production!)

Staring at some of the worst stage design in Phantom -hey, maybe others don't mind bare floors and smoke passing for "sets" or a chandalier that takes 10 minutes to "fall" on someone. I do.

This does not make me asinine, drunk, or wrong. Just as MEF leaving Sweet Charity at intermission was not wrong.

The difference is, I do not post on every Phantom, Blood brothers and Titanic thread how terrible the shows were and insist that no one dare see them like some others (cough -WISHIHADATONY-cough) do. And I certainly would not go running to a computer to report my opinion on a show that I walked out on.

And, my point in my last post was NOT that they should have closed in previews, my POINT was that I FELT they should have closed in previews but did not go running to every thread to say that over and over again like WISH does.

Nothings really offending me, save the revisionist history. No...CHARITY wasn't a huge hit...but it was not a flop...critically or otherwise. I've read the reviews. Mixed to positive is about as bad as it got.

We get it. You hate the show. Fine. But don't rewrite history to prove your point.

Unless, of course, you ARE toking on a crack pipe, and then all can be forgiven with a stint at Hazeldon.

This is a BROADWAY MESSAGE BOARD. Many people on here post reviews after shows they have seen - myself included. Mef didn't review SWEET CHARITY - he was just reporting back to us. If I saw it and left, instead of posting a review, I would have said "I left at intermission - it's terrible." There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying you hate a show in previews. This isn't the New York Times, it's a message board. Get over it.

"Stones" was unbearably bad...and I didn't see the Pinchot production. I saw the LA premiere.

As for leaving shows at intermission- The only two shows I ever left were Scarlet Pimpernel (I couldn't handle Doug Sills's gay minstrel show antics) and Aida (the final straw was the pseudo-R&B "Nubia" song made me feel embarassed for the people on stage).

Well I think it's wrong to be going in literally EVERY Sweet Charity thread and post how much you hate it, and how its one of the worst shows you've seen.

It's on the verge of shilling, in a negative way!

I do agree that WISH posting how terrible CHARITY is in every SC thread is stupid and pointless - we get it - but all I'm saying is that walking out of a show and saying you did so is not rude. It's your right as a theatregoer.

Wait a minute....

Has WISH seen this version of Charity?

His "educated" posts lead me to think he has. And he must have seem every version of this production, from workshops in NY, MN, Chicago and Boston. Oh...and he must have been at the same previews that MEF and others have attended. Yes, that makes sense. Then he would have every right to bash it. Because he has watched it.

Yeah, there are some shows you sit through so years from now you can say..."Yes, I saw ALL of Dance of the Vampires." I'll freely admit it.

You would've sat through Dancre of the Vampires if it was the original version. TRUST ME!

I saw the show in Minneapolis and honestly was not blown away by the show. Denis O'Hare and Diaz and Sandy were amazing, however. I did not leave at intermission because 1) I had never seen the show before, 2) I was familiar with some of the score, and 3) I wanted to be able to at least say I saw the show.

"Wish" isn't trying to push his "SC" agenda on anyone-- just trying to state the fact that I agree with-- it's not a strong show. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, a fact that seems to be constantly lacking on this "board of tolerance".

I could rant about how much I thought "Mamma Mia" was a fun afternoon of theatre that made me leave happy, but my cornflakes would get pissed on by so-called theatre snobs. I could rant on how I did not enjoy "Grand Hotel" and it bored me to death, but I couldn't leave because I was 13 in 1991 and seeing it with my parents.

Everyone just let it go. There will be other shows. We're all not going to agree. "Wish" has been nothing but stating an opinion and everyone jumps if it doesn't match what they think. Hmmm.... what color is your kettle?

When did people actually stop reading the posts before commenting on them?

Tenor,

No one has a problem with WISH hating SC. He has every right to. The problem is he is trying to state as fact that CHARITY was a flop in its original incarnation and the '86 revival. Those facts are NOT TRUE. Not matter how much he wants them to be. So before you tell people to 'let it go', read the posts and see what the actual issue is.

WishIhadatony,
You are one hard headed individual. Stop stating as facts things that are not true.

You said " The bad reviews and bad word of mouth that greeted the original Broadway production and its 1980s revival seem likely to return for the "return" of this turkey."

The 80's revival recieved all around very good reviews. Along with Tony nominations for best revival, best actress, and best supporting actor and actress among others. The show did recoup. It lost buisness once Debbie Allen left and eventually closed. But for alot of its run it kept the huge Minskoff at 90% capacity. Sweet Charity is a treasured musical in the broadway catalog and for you to constantly and erroneously state negative and untrue things about it is a insult . I also want to point out again to everyone.. that you have not seen this production that you are so constantly baggering. And I want to also point out to you that bad karma does come back to you. Keep wishing for that Tony for yourself. the rate you are going.. you will die with out it.. it will never happen.
