Just listened to the revival on the drive from OKC to Dallas.

I'm in love.

I have to at least 3 servings of Audra McDonald a day.

The 110 Recording is usually my lunch. Love, Don't Turn Away makes a great appetizer, and Old Maid with a side of Raunchy as the main course; finishing with Simple Little Things as a savory dessert.

Always leaves me wanting more.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

You might want to also check out the two-disc studio version from Jay Records. All of the music -- and all of it gorgeous.

I agree. I think that the score is so beautiful. Simple Little Things and Is It Really Me are my two favorites, with Old Maid, Raunchy, and Love Don't Turn Away all tieing for a close second. Audra is brilliant.

SeanMartin, what are your thoughts on Tunick's orchestrations in comparison to the (I assume original?) ones on that recording.

Well, bear in mind that the OC of 110 is one of my favourite albums. The Jay recording does use the original orchestrations, but they sound sweetened a bit, mostly in the strings. Tunick's are a different sound, no question about it -- in a way, not quite as lush as the originals and yet very cool in other ways. It's sort of a draw.

But in the vocals... well, wait a sec and let me put on the flame-proof suit. Audra is good... but she just doesnt sound like Lizzie. She sounds like Audra -- not that there's anything really wrong with that, but... :: shrug :: I still prefer the original.

Cool beans. I loved your description of "Make Our Garden Grow" in the 'Greatest Moments' thread. Though I might like the man saying "Any questions?" at the end more...

BLAH!

Sorry, I just had to say it...

A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.

My favorite song is definitely "The Rain Song"

The only time I actually got chills during a show was during that number- I love it so much!

The Tunick orchestrations create a bit of a more intimate sound, considering the production is smaller scaled than the original. But they are a little bland, and there are a few wonky things that have been done with tempos and making the songs more conversational. For a little story, the emotions get very big, and the Hershy Kay original orchestrations have a sweep and grandeur to them that the Tunick orchestrations can't replicate. You should definitely give a listen to either the original cast recording, or the JAY recording.

As much as I worship and adore Karen Ziemba, she strains a bit for the high notes at the end of "Old Maid". Other than that, her performance on the Jay recording is flawless. And her acting, dancing and overall charisma on stage in the NYCO production made you forget that she didn't posess a gigantic "opera diva" singing voice.

The score is beautiful - I love listening to it during the summer.

The original broadway cast album is so worth looking for and having in your collection. My problem with Audra in the current production is that I am so used to Inga Swenson's phrasing, and her "performance" of Lizzie (which I'm too young to have seen; but she performs/acts the songs brilliantly). I "hear" Inga's voice during "Raunchy", "Old Maid", and "Love, Don't Turn Away" in my head; Audra is a great vocalist, and she delivers, but Inga IS Lizzie, Audra is Audra... I love the entire score. I think it's the best lesser known score of the entire 1960's!

On first viewing I found the music a bit boring and dated. However, I bought the revival cast recording a few days after seeing it and love listening to it! I don't know why I thought it was ever boring; it is as if Copeland decided to write a musical...and I love it. It just makes you smile. Some great underscoring on this recording; I haven't heard the original so I don't know if that's the work of Tunick in his arrangements, but I just can't stop listening to it.

I can't get through most of the songs on the OBC. I'm sure Igna was great and I understand the voice to match the character and all that... but I just don't like the way it sounds.

This revival is SO FANTASIC. Audra can't help being blessed with the voice from heaven. When I saw her I believed that she was Lizzie, and I still do when I listen to the recording (JMHO).

There aer so many tracks that I love on this recording, I'm really into "Evenin' Star" right now (even though I didn't enjoy Steve Kazee very much in the role). And "Love Don't Turn Away" is one of my new favorite songs.

The new cast recording has basically defined my summer - it's a beautiful, classic score that creates such vivid imagery through sound alone. An excellent piece of theater.

I didn't know anything really about the show when I saw it and after the first act I told my mom, "I love this show!" Some of the singing could have been tweaked a bit but I thought it was something different and refreshing.

I love aspects of both the OBCR and the revival recording. When it comes down to it though, I listen to the OBCR a lot more than the revival. I prefer the orchestrations and the performances (don't kill me, but I think Inga is considerably better than Audra in this role and Lesley Ann Warren has so much character in Little Red Hat), while I love the tracks with dialogue and songs that aren't in the OBCR (like Evenin' Star).

The music is gorgeous, but the lyrics are lazy and generic. I am only familiar with the revival cast recording. I've seen the show twice now, and both on stage and on the CD, Steve Kazee doesn't do it for me. Is Starbuck supposed to be 10 years younger than Lizzie? Because it just seems so obvious, and it takes away from the possibility of any real chemistry.

Audra is stunning and I love listening to her, John Cullum -- who is fantastic, and every word that Bobby Steggert sings. Christopher Innvar also has a rich, full voice that is great to listen to. What really takes away from it all is those darn lyrics. Nothing kills me more than listening to great performers trying to dig true meaning out of lazy, run of the mill lyrics.
