Do I need to know any background to these shows [because I know none] to like the CD? I'm thinking of buying these CDs because I wanted to get something new and I've heard pretty great things about these recordings. And they're slightly cheaper than ther other CDs on Amazon.com. I listening to some clips on iTunes, but it would be nice to get some comments.
Haven't listened to GG yet (have it, just haven't gotten around to it yet) -- but [title of show] is pretty accessible. I haven't seen it, but didn't have too much trouble following the songs.
LOVE [title of show]. Some of my favorite jokes and asides made it onto that recording, and I listen to Die Vampire Die more often than is necessary. There's only one plot element in the show that isn't reflected in the recording (Emily Skinner!) but it doesn't hinder your understanding of it at all.
I highly highly highly recommend [title of show]. The tunes are so darn catchy, and there are some wonderful harmonies. If you're like me, you'll find yourself listening to the CD straight through several times.
The synopsis in the CD booklet is enough to understand the story. You'll love it!
"The world is a better place because of hairspray." - Michael Ball
The CD of Grey Gardens comes with a very informative booklet which includes all of the lyrics to all of the musical numbers. The score is very likable and should be listened to before seeing the show.
[tos] is my favorite cast recording of all time! (slips just past DOLLY! )
I can't recommend it enough. I'm bringing this cast recording to the grave with me!
(P.S. - It's that big in real life too!)

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

I bought [title of show] from Dress Circle a couple of weeks back, and I had no trouble following it, despite not having seen or being likely to see the show!
Adding onto this thread - I listened to the clips of [title of show] that they have on amazon.com, so I got a little feel for them, but can someone tell me what most of the songs are like in general? Are they mostly funny songs, or are there serious songs? Also, can the music be compared to any other musicals?
I'm thinking of getting the CD, but still can't decide. Thanks!
A Synopsis for Grey Gardens wouldn't do you as much good as seeing the Documentary it is based on. Honestly, rent it, then listen to the score. You will be very impressed.
a lot of [title of show] is funny but there's a few sentimental ones in there as well. it's totally just a piano man (Larry) and then two guys or two girls or all of them singing. :)
