Hello everyone, I've been a reader for a while and decided to finally join up since I'm spending some time at home recovering from a car accident. So I decided to ask a question.
Since I have all this extra time I've decided to start building a small collection of CDs I've always wanted. Would anyone know where I could find the rarer cast recordings of the Rocky Horror Show? Like the older foreign cast recordings. I already got 7 of them used off of Amazon for some great prices.
Also, I'm looking to get all the Decca re-releases of the ALW musicals for less than list price if I can. Some of them are super expensive. I dont mind used copies if they are in ok condition. The hardest to find is the OCR (with LuPone) of Sunset, but not the thick double CD, the slimline one in the cardboard sleeve.
Thanks for making this place the place to be where the people with the most knowledge of these things gather.
I've only used the Dress Circle, and they were excellent. The other 2 are pretty well-known sources for foreign cast recordings, but I can't recommend them as I've never used them. The only other places I can think of are eBay and Amazon's sites in other countries. If you go to Amazon's homepage and scroll all the way down, you can change the country. Good luck. If you don't mind me asking, why do you want Sunset Boulevard only in the cardboard sleeve? Just a space issue?
I've been led to believe that the Decca re-issues in the slimline cases and cardboard sleeves are re-mastered recordings. If anyone knows anything to the contrary, please let me know. Thanks for the lead on the amazon sites.
I just thought of one other thing about the saving money aspect. If you go to http://www.borders.com/online/store/BRLandingView?sc_eid2=promorewards-52410 and register, they'll send you coupons via e-mail 2 or 3 times a week. They're only valid for a few days, but it's normally at least 25%. The highest I've seen is 40%. I think I only signed up online and don't have an actual card, but that's never caused any problems. If your order is under $25 and you don't' want to pay shipping, you can have them ship it to the store for free. I never shop Barnes & Noble because I never see any coupons.
Another good way to fill gaps in your collection is to check E-Bay regularly. Many in-print items get listed with starting bids of like $1. Out-of-print items sometimes go for a lot more but as long as you make a pact with yourself not to go over a certain amount for a specific title you won't get caught up in any last minute bidding wars.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Well, I have no advice on the CD's, but I just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
If you do check eBay, make sure you check the UK site too. Today I bought a CD from a store there that I could only find as an MP3 download at Amazon and iTunes.
