It's hardly set in stone yet!
She's got the perfect amount of ferocity. gah.

I wish there was a way to suggest it. Julia would be AMAZING. She can be sexy and fierce and powerful and everything an Evita needs.
And finally something worthy of her talent!

As much as we all love the Julia, and as much as I think she has the tenacity to play the part, her vibrato...
"He supp-o-o-o-o-rts y-o-o-o-o-u f-o-o-r he l-o-o-o-o-ves y-o-o-ou..."
If she can get that under control, sure; but even if Sylvia got rid of that vibrato, I'd still take Alice over anybody.
I say Linda Eder plays Evita. If you havent heard her...you should
The more I think about it, Idina as Evita is a great idea.
I do agree. I would fly to London to see Idina, because ive already met her and seen her in her concert, which was fantastic. Dont judge Idina till you see her concert. But Linda would be equally if not more amazing. Listen to her BRoadway, My Way CD. She's great for the role
You gotta be kidding...
Who wouldn't go see Madonna in a musical?
WE know Idina, but we are a select few compared to Madonna
power...
If anything, Madonna should do it in London, make the revival extremely popular, and then open with Idina on Broadway...

I would probably HATE Madonna in Evita, but would pay A LOT OF MONEY to see the woman on a small (well, sort of small) stage!!!!
I don't know about Idina. "She doesn't have the voice" to quote another Lloyd Webber. And Linda Eder? She definately has a VOICE, but have you ever seen her act? Probably not, or else you wouldn't suggest her.
Josie Walker (of The Beautiful Game) should get this role. She would be brilliant, and has been brilliant in a touring production.
madonna may be a "smart money choice" but i dont think shed be good at all on this show. She'd blow her voice on a Broadway schedule, not saying idina wouldn't, but she has gotten better at not "screeching" if you will. I wouldnt want to see Madonna in evita. shes already done it... and wasnt that good.
ahahahah I will be in London when this opens! SCORE!!!

OK
First, Idina would be great as Eva..she'd sing the **** ourt of it
Second, I actually think Madonna would be fine, if they kept the arrangements as they did in the film that suited her range..I think she could do 8 shows a week no problem..she did tour after all, and sang (most of it) live..and she would sell more tickets..Vocals not withstanding..she's too old!!!!!in terms of marketing there is no contest.
Third, alternative to both...Lea Salonga?
Well, I think it goes far beyond the point on her being good, as much as having her open the revival could guarantee it could run for a LONG TIME...just think "the show that Madonna opened".
They could have a chorus of junior high schoolers, a drag queen midget playing Che, a sock puppet as Peron, but if Madonna is Eva, it would AT LEAST pre sell 6 months of the run.
Things to think about:
-Age isn't such an issue in theatre. You usually HAVE to have an older actor play a role, straight play or musical, as younger performers don't usually have the chops just yet. And, you don't have a camera in their face to betray age as much.
-No actress should do 8 performances of Evita a week. I think Madonna could pull off 6 a week. She's lately been in her best vocal place ever--The ReInvention Tour sounded fantastic.
-An Evita who can DANCE would be thrilling--whoever that ends up being. "Buenos Aires" would be on fire.
Man, I just hope the revival of Evita ends up being HOT. I enjoyed a regional production that recreated the original Bway staging, but I want to see the show fresh and new. There are so many possibilities.
That is, assuming they lower the keys for her the way they did in the film, otherwise she simply can't sing it as written. And she's not much of an actress. I, to, would love to see an unknown get cast in this, someone with the vocal chops AND the acting ability, instead of just relying on a name to sell tickets (which seems to be the way of the world thesedays and there's not much we can do to change it, unfortunately.)
oh, that reminds me of the other thing to think about--changing keys doesn't make someone automatically inferior. Keys are changed to suit performers all the time. All the time. Unless you have perfect pitch, it shouldn't matter as long as the key chosen creates the same exciting timbre in the performer's voice.
Well, I guess the key changes for the film left me flat. I didn't feel a thing when she sang that stuff. Nowhere near as exciting as Patti's voice!
Thus, I would argue you didn't enjoy Madonna's voice---not necessarily the key changes.

"I just don't think Idina can sing the part 8 times a week for a year "
And Madonna could do it 8 times a week for even a month with her oh-so-strong voice?!
If Idina was able to handle the vocal demands of the role of Elphaba with that kind of attendance record she had on Broadway, I'd say she could easily handle the role of Eva.
edit: Madonna was good in the role in the movie, even though thay had to lower the key of some songs for her. But let's face it, today she's way too old for the role - she's 47 and Eva Peron died at 32. Even though I'm not saying the actresses should only play the roles around their actual ages, I am saying that Madonna is far too famous for the role to be taken seriously for a 32-year-old.

Well, the rold of Elphaba is not as vocally challenging as that of Eva - even Patti LuPone took performances off. In WICKED, she would belt a few notes in each song. In EVITA, she sings almost the entire score with such power and ferocity that it is difficult for ANYONE to do that 8 times a week.
As far as Idina's talents are concerned, I'm not one to say whether she can or cannot handle the vocal requirements, but imagining her raw-ish voice with that score doesn't really work for me. And, as we all know, Idina is seriously lacking in the acting department....
Sant--do you have me blocked? Cuz you clearly didn't read my posts!!!!
:P
mad donna has a new CD coming out in nov, so i would think she'd want to promote that [since her last CD flopped!] instead of re-hashing something she's already done on film.
Actually, her last CD was platinum, so I wouldn't go so far as to say it flopped.
