I hate to see any musical closing. But it did have "flop" written all over, didn't it?
Idol: The Musical, which began previews on July 7th and opened August 12th at the 45th Street Theatre, has announced that it has closed due to poor ticket sales.
"Idol: The Musical is a satirical musical comedy that focuses on the outrageous and delusional fan base of the hit television show," states press notes, "The musical takes place in Steubenville, Ohio where a group of misfit students are preparing for their community college graduation after which they are determined to drag themselves out of the dregs of the middle-of-nowhere. There are ten of them; all belonging to the same cult-like club that meets daily in a garage that doubles as a shrine to Clay Aiken. They are viciously ridiculed by the rest of Steubenville; a humiliating situation that doesn't deter their quest for all things Clay. They are victims of A.D.D., Ritalin, their misguided obsessions and their innocent longing for their elusive 15 minutes…," stated press notes.
Produced by the Syracuse Civic Theatre's Todd Ellis, "Idol" features a book by Bill Boland. Jon Balcourt composed the music. Boland and Balcourt co-wrote the lyrics. Daniel Tursi directed the production.

I saw it yesterday.
Without being overly nasty, let's just say this was the most merciful of mercy killings, and move on.

They certainly spent a load...what with replacing an entire cast and all...
And it's interesting...one factor for the closure is audience reaction...intense.

When I first read about this show, I thought someone was making a joke.

Posted: 8/13/07 at 6:49pmI was being sarcastic, not shocking at all. Grease! won't close because its advanced sales are great. I wouldn't go see Grease! though I love the show, it looks too amateur-ish.

Ouch. It sounded like it sucked, but that's sad that it only made it for one performance.

I was the one who originally posted it was the WORST show I had seen in YEARS and YEARS of theatergoing. Tons of people were walking out of the intermissionless "skit". The reviews for this "skit" are beyond horrid, especially the curtainup.com review.

What were people thinking when they decided to charge $60 for this?? This show was just HORRIBLE. These people probably lost tons of money and I hope they never produce anything EVER again in New York City. A complete waste of everyone's time involved.
