It'll be so sad next time I go into the city to see something other than Sweet Charity on the Hirschfeld marquee. I think it will really hit me then that it's over.
Pardon me, I'm still mourning.

Posted: 1/27/06 at 8:39amI may have said this already, but has anyone but me noticed that ever since the Martin Beck Theatre was renamed the Hirschfeld, (not counting Man of La Mancha) cheesy musicals have been going in?

What, like Wonderful Town?
Actually, as the Martin Beck, it was a total bomb house for almost the ten years in between Dracula (in 1977) and Into the Woods (in 1987).
Consider:
Harold and Maude - 4 performances
It's So Nice to be Civilized - 8 performances
Onward Victoria - 1 performance
Bring Back Birdie - 4 performances
The First - 37 performances
Come Back to the Five and Dime ... - 4 perfomances
A Little Family Business - 4 performances
The Rink - 204 performances
Requiem for a Heavyweight - 3 performances
Take Me Along - 1 performance

I don't think Wonderful Town and Sweet Charity were cheesy. Yes, they were lighthearted and fun. Not really cheesy. No dancing skeletons.
Especially if you take the original productions of both shows. WT was groundbreaking, and Fosse's Charity was anything but cheesy.
