I was just about to post "Encores! Celia Keenan- Bolger and Carolee Carmello." but someone beat me to it.
Carrie is NOT junk, nor did it BOMB. It actually did VERY well. The only reason it closed was because the foreign bankers got scared of the bad reviews and pulled out. All of the performances were nearly, or were completely, sold out every evening. Many shows get bad reviews today..such as Wicked, which has a huge following regardless of reviews.
How could anyone call a show with lyrics about killing a pig junk? The idea!!

I third Carolee Carmello and Celia Keenan-Bolger (who I never thought of) and second the recording of this concert!!
Ok, so today I read Act One. Gee, this show really needs a LOT of work. Some of the lyrics are absolutely dreadful.
I think it would need a LOT of re-working to be taken seriously. I can't help but think that the RSC thought they had another Les Mis on their hands with this though - it certainly is very ambitious.
Some of the scenes between Carrie and Margaret are quite nice but pretty much ALL of the school scenes are just awful.
Presently I am thinking it should be done as a camp tribute.
On another note, I was pleasantly surprised with the destruction scene. Aside from throwing the bucket over her I thought the rest of this scene was done quite well.
hmm watch he show 1st, dont just read the act 1 script lol
Maybe give it to Jim Steinman to toggle with it. He is great at doing that heavy hitting musical stuff along with a bit of humor. (And don't mention the new version of DOTV cause he never liked that version AT ALL)
Give it a rockier bit to it and bring out the scare factor. I mean we know people like scary.. look at shows like The Lady in Black....
I think if they did it.. do it "off kilter" horror.
And I think Alice Ripley or even Emily Skinner would be wonderful. I know the twins but really... they would....
Carolee would rock the score too!

I was going to suggest Carolee Carmello and Celia Keenan-Bolger as well, but I'm happy to see I was beat to it
They'd be fantastic.
That is such genius casting. Maybe it would finally win Carolee her Tony. And Celia would knock it out of the park.

If they do it, they HAVE to use the original logo art.
Oops, duple post.
Random... Maybe it's because someone at work has me working on rewriting some lyrics to a song to fit our kids (elementary school) so they could sing it at "graduation" so my brain is changing lyrics all over the place, but every time I read down the list and see it, I read this thread title to "If Mama Was Married".
Like I said. Random.
If they revived Carrie, it would be a PERFECT role for Clay Aiken!
I can TOTALLY see it!

Clay's been gone for two days, and you still cannot stop talking about him.
Would you like me to send you a Claymate pin?
I would love to see Sh-k-boom do a recording of this, studio or concert. I'd actually prefer Ripley over Carmello for the role.

If "they" revived Carrie, "they" would be on drugs because "they" would lose every dime "they" invested. Let us never forget that theatre is about money. Even a non-profit has to do something at the box office.
If everyone who semi-regularly logs onto BroadwayWorld went to see Carrie and brought 10 friends, it would still run a week. The Broadway run was short because they had no money left and none was forthcoming. There was no advance. If there was an advance, Carrie would not have closed in a week.
To start, none of the principals in Carrie metaphorically 'sing'. They are all tone-deaf. Even wimpy little Carrie. A musical where no one is musical cannot succeed.
I saw this comedy of errors and I have always divided it into thirds: a third sort of worked, specifically mother and daughter; another third had nothing to do with anything, the choreography springs to mind although you can toss in about half the score as I recall; the last third was dreadful, just ghastly, like the Pigs Blood Ballet, the scenery, the gym teacher in a white semi-formal dress and 3" white pumps, Margaret's costume lingerie which went against everything she sang and spoke about, and the tone-deaf characters.
Carrie failed at the outset. It is a crappy idea for a musical.
Not Barker - the original poster but update with -
"After twenty years, Broadway's biggest flop returns... and she's mad as hell!"
I disagree 100 percent that its a bad idea for a musical, look at the themes and characters. At the heart of Carrie its a Cinderella story with a tragic ending .
Also the advance on Broadway was not crappy, in fact it had a very healthy advance. The reason they closed it was because they were scared that the reviews would stop people buying tickets. They never gave it a chance to run because fear got the better of (some of) them
