Yes, you'll be fine.

They don't even check.

And it's a library, not the Pentagon.

If you're visiting from out of town, make your decision carefully. MANY (if not all) of these suggestions coming in are easily available to view elsewhere...and even to own on your very own DVD.

Pick something good...not XANADU or the RAGTIME revival...

I have to echo what munkustrap178 is saying (although not sure I would ever agree with the statement "pick something good...not the Ragtime revival"), both about it not being that difficult to get an appointment and about choosing carefully. Like I said, they've never asked me for a school ID or any other sort of proof. I do think you'll have to supply the name of your school and class, but that's all.

As for choosing a show, you must be careful not only because you might run across it in some other medium (of course this is only true for those types of people who actually know where to look and/or have no problem going a less-kosher route), but also because of the whole one-time-only part. For instance, I'd love to watch something like [title of show] (assuming they recorded it) or Gypsy, both of which I saw back in 2008. But I also know I'll probably want to watch them a lot more when the years have passed and my recollection begins to fade. So just choose carefully.

I am curious, though. Which of these suggestions is available (and might I [probably not on this thread] inquire how?)?

I did not mean to suggest that the shows I mentioned were not good (though, I despise XANADU)...I should have worded it better.

I meant, pick something that isn't readily available anywhere else...most current things are, and exist in very good quality. Don't waste a priceless library visit on that...save it for something extraordinary and rare.

Hell, even the pre-Broadway, B&W, grainy CHORUS LINE is readily available.

Thanks to all on this thread for such helpful information. I viewed "The Light in the Piazza" yesterday and the LCT revival of "Carousel" today. It was so easy to do! The guys on duty today were more strict than the one yesterday was, but still, my flimsy excuse sufficed. I want to come back to NYC and see more as soon as possible! I would HIGHLY recommend the "Piazza" tape to everyone. It is beautifully done and captures the show perfectly in my opinion (as someone who had never seen it before). "Carousel" was great too, but "Piazza" had the good fortune to have much brighter lighting than "Carousel" did. One moment I really enjoyed in "Piazza" was a close-up shot of Kelli O'Hara and Matthew Morrison while he is singing "Love to Me." He is just upstage of her and the shot is close enough that you can see his emotions while singing and hers listening to his song. It's just beautiful and I had to rewind and watch it again. So yes, please watch "Light in the Piazza"...just beautiful and I feel so lucky to have been able to experienced it even after it closed!

Thanks again for all the information. I know I'll be using this resource many times in the future.

Would love to see again the original productions of Miss Saigon and Cabaret (with Alan Cumming).

Is it true that you have to be 18 to watch recordings?

Yes, but I don't believe they ask for ID. You just have to say that you are 18.
