In The Heights Revival

Hypothetical question, How likely do you think it is that we'll get an In The Heights revival to accompany the movie's release in 2020? It's been 10 years since the debut, and it's going strong in so many international productions.

Thoughts?

Not very likely.

Thanks! I'm not holding my breath but I think the movie could give it a push. Wishful thinking

A revival in the next 5 years seems inevitable. I remember Jeffrey Seller saying in an interview not long ago that he's disappointed the original didn't run longer. And the movie plus the Hamilton hype could really help it.

My thoughts as well. 10 years later seems like a pretty good mark, no? We literally just had a West Side Story revival and that's already returning - same with A Chorus Line.

Well those two shows are considered classics. As good as some find In the Heights, it hardly is in the same category.

The Color Purple and Spring Awakening revivals might be better comparisons than WSS and ACL (the latter is not Broadway, it's one weekend at Encores).

True. It's not a classic like those two are.

I think it could do well, even if Hamilton was still going strong. Even though it's only 1 of the 96,000 plots of the show, gentrification is still going strong in NYC - story is pretty timeless.

It will probably be the next show at the Richard Rodgers.

So when Hamilton closes in like..10 years?

In order for it to happen within the next 5 years or so, I think we have to wait for some regional or foreign theatre to come up with a brilliant re-imagining of it, which then can play an NYC run if it's popular enough. That's essentially what happened with both Color Purple and Spring Awakening. It's not like Broadway producers just said "hey, it's about time for a new production of this show from 10 years ago" - they just transferred in an existing, already well-received production.

Too soon. I liked the original production but i would rather see a new work rather than a revival of this - or almost any previous significant Broadway musical.

Yeah I know. I was kinda hoping there would be a little buzz after the Kennedy Center production. Sadly, I'm not sure how you could exactly re-imagine ITH since the story and set are pretty straight-forward.

I would love to see the London production crossing the pond to Circle in the Square. The intimacy adds so much to the sheer energy that I don't think a proscenium theater can manage to exude.

I saw In The Heights (my only time seeing it) in London. I loved it! I just don’t know if they would revive it so soon especially with Hamilton still running so strong. I know ALW has simultaneous shows on Broadway all the time so I suppose this would be no different. I like the idea of an immersive Circle in the Square idea or even better off-Broadway at the new Ars Nova (formerly Barrow Street Theatre) ala Sweeney Todd. I do hope Miranda eventually returns to the stage with new work. I have hopes he will when the right inspiration appears, but considering how long Hamilton (what year did he start?) germinated before hitting broadway in 2015, I don’t think it will be anytime soon. He has a lot more irons in the fire than he did then.

There is going to be a movie version of In The Heights.

^Yes, we know...so does the OP, since that's in his original post.
