I can see it getting several nominations...Musical, Score, Book, Actor, Director, Choreography, Costumes...but will it be completely swept aside by "Matilda?"
I just remember how "The Producers" kept "Monty" from winning anything...and I liked "Monty" a hell of a lot more.

I think Cyndi Lauper will take score and Matilda book. I think Diane Paulus will take direction of a musical and Pippin will do very well in the acting and technical awards. Bertie Carvel will take whichever category he's placed in, I think. But I see Patina Miller (if placed in leading actress) and Andrea Martin as spoilers for a Matilda sweep. And choreography for Pippin (if it's eligible), set and lighting design (oh and sound design-I heard every word uttered perfectly).
Yeah, Matilda takes best musical, but I think Pippin might take more overall awards (and deserve it).

I saw Matilda in London (will see it on Broadway in a couple weeks), saw Kinky Boots in previews. I would say I regard Kinky Boots as infintely more meaningful and artsy. But with those two AND Motown on the scene (which I have not seen but will on the same trip I see Matilda), I can picture a scenario where awards get divided between the three. And I'll probably get crucified for saying this, but even though it's "non-traditional", I sincerely hope "Bring It On" gets a nomination for choreography...
Gawd I loved The Full Monty (both in San Diego and on Broadway).

I think it's safe to assume that, outside of any category where a musical has a specific advantage (CINDERELLA for Costumes or Orchestration, perhaps; PIPPIN for Featured Actress) MATILDA is a likely favorite for most Musical Awards this year. Best Musical, Score, Book, Director, Actress, Actor (Lead or Featured, wherever Carvel ends up), and Lights/Sound/Set all seem likely to me. Costumes could go to CINDERELLA, so to me that'll be an early harbinger of a MATILDA sweep if it takes that one, too.

Honestly, the Kinky Boots costumes aren't great. Other than the shoes themselves, the costumes are pretty generic. Cinderella and even Pippin are way more deserving of that award.

Posted: 4/15/13 at 6:25pmIMO, Full Monty was a far superior show to Kinky Boots, although I understand your point. There was some egregious overlooks b/c of The Producers, particularly Kathleen Freeman, Andre de Shields and Best Score. I do, however, think that Billy Porter has a chance for Best Actor in a Musical and believe that Stark Sands merits a nod. Let's face it, this hasn't been a stellar year for musicals, particularly if you're allergic to kiddie shows.
