You won’t understand it unless you were on this board prior to 2010. Or you could actually research older threads, which i’m sure can easily be found. PJ is a wealth of knowledge and experience. You don’t need to grovel to his opinions, but you could attempt to start a dialogue, a conversation, a healthy back and forth. I don’t see anyone attempting that today. In the past, we could have heated discussions with PJ, but in the end, there was always a respect for his knowledge. These days, I don’t see younger posters interested in healthy and passionate discussion. This board is flooded with childlike posts about stage doors, etc. It’s quite sad.

This sh!t is so weak. This has nothing to do with his knowledge. This as nothing to do with his "stories." This thread was not made to start a healthy back and forth. I've been on this board, in various ways, multiple times a day since 2004. I'm aware. Pal Joey posted a b!tchy thread and he got it handed back to him. I'm happy he worked on the mostly forgotten 1980's revival of West Side Story. I appreciate his stories about it. But that doesn't make him past scrutiny.
The pretension, vitriol, and lack of awareness and respect among the new posters has made this site a largely negative experience for the past year or so. This only nails that point home.
Pal Joey, I thought this thread was quite funny. Obviously, some can't take a joke.
"We have forgotten our public manners."
Oh, for Christ's sake, what does it hurt for a member of the old guard to be a little on edge about a revival? If it wasn't PJ and it wasn't West Side, I'm pretty sure no one would care, and the thread would proceed like literally every other revival thread.
The cardinal rules of a revival's reception by fans from its earliest days are always as follows:
* There is one traditionalist in every crowd of fans for every show.
* No amount of argument will stop them from feeling the way they feel.
And that's okay.
Further, if this thread is what he needs to do to cope with something he doesn't like, let him get a laugh. Even if he winds up being wrong and the revival is truly transcendent, the OP is still bug-f#ck hilarious to anyone who has seen an Ivo van Hove production.
Make like Elsa and let it go, people. (Even if you'd prefer that PJ did.)

I'm with you, ljay. I feel like this board has really gone to the dogs in the past year or so.

This. 100% this. The disappearance of long-time knowledgeable posters like Pal Joey (who used to post regularly), Margot Channing, jaystarr, Ziegfeld Girl, Mildred Plotka, Phyllis Rogers Stone, Namo, et. all and their replacement with posters more concerned about who stage doors, how long rush lines are, and who the third cover for Burr is then they are with theater history is a disturbing trend that’s made the boards a shell of their former self. It’s a sad, disturbing, trend.
I even miss Mr. Roxy these days.

Nice quick edit.
Challenging those who would like to be the gatekeepers of an artform that is slowly dying due to the refusal to update and create new things?
If challenging you is disrespectful, then you're weak and don't deserve respect. You don't "get" my respect just because you're old.
Post a b!tchy thread, be prepared for b!tchy responses.
You're not above reproach because you've been posting here pre-2010.
Furthermore, this thread is nothing more than the old throwing a tantrum because things change.

And yet, you’re the one who’s admitted to having to post here in “various ways” (aka various usernames) since 2004. So perhaps, given that you’ve had to keep rejoining the site, the problem is you.
Good lord, you people. I thought it was pretty funny, actually.
The problem with these boards has little a lot to do with a lack of respect, but mostly because no one actually want to DISCUSS things, they just want to be right. Too many lash out when their word isn't taken as gospel and even get pissy when proven what they've stated is out and out wrong. They take any criticism (or disagreement (as a personal attack). Too many also think the only one allowed to have an opinion is themselves.
If we all LISTENED more instead of just formulating our retaliation (here and in life) we'd all be better off.

Girl, I hope you're that good at your reaches when you're working with your personal trainer.
I'm probably around the same age as Pal Joey, loves. You can cut that crap right now about the "young ones." This is a disrespectful thread and it recieved appropriate responses, of course. I worked on a few original productions of shows and I've seen them drastically re-imagined over the years. I didn't throw a tantrum on an online message board because I can't deal with change. I'm sure your stories are remarkable, but that still doesn't change my opinion on this subject. Almost every musical has a change in it's choreography for a major revival because people want to see something new. I saw the last two revivals and the 1980 revival was great and the recent revival was really stale. Some of us have seen two (some maybe three) productions with the exact same staging. The original choreo is great, but maybe it's just time for something new.
This thread is a GAME!
Good grief.

They don’t get it and won’t get it. They will take offense to anything now on this site. It’s the Patti Murin effect. The days of snarky fun are far gone. It’s a shame.
What a miserable bunch.
No I get the game. I just don't appreciate that it's basically just a temper tantrum that's been carried over from a different thread.

It sure is. This thread just proves it. Everyone gets offended by everything, that nothing here is the least bit fun anymore. Patti Murin ruined it.
Patti Murin was right though. This board used to be all b*tchy white old queens with little regard for the fact that they were speaking about real people with feelings. Sorry if some of us are moving into the 21st century. Maybe you would like to join us.
Also, I would've played along with this thread if it were actually funny. It's not funny. It's just lame.

Ok, everyone has had their say on the level of snark in this thread. It's probably a good time to get it back on the topic of what an Ivo van Hove revival of "West side Story" will look like. Thanks so much, and enjoy your Sunday.
I swear to god you people have an alert set, and the minute the name Patti Murin is invoked you come running in here to “moderate.”

Nope, just got home from the grocery store and read through the vitriol in the thread. Now back to the topic at hand...
ah, gotta love the sound of people realizing that the death knell for their relevancy in society has already sounded.

That is a different thread.
