I think they *are*, Tiff. Possibly with the exception of OTM.
CJWesselman, any scripts that were online have been dramatically altered, so they won't help you.
I think Emcee's right, Tiff. OTM was performed live for the movie, but I think the rest of the songs are being lip-synched to the actual cd tracks.
Do we have any 'insider' info on those sorts of things? lol. I think I remember reading somewhere where Chris Columbus was talking about 'having' to add dialogue because a straight up operetic format (like the stage version) wouldn't work on film (although Moulin Rogue was damn close to that)....I just wonder if, like, the 'voicemails' and stuff were cut and replaced with actual, like dialogue or voicemails rewritten to sound less melodic and more like realistic...or something. I dunno. I'm no longer worried about the look of the film, no longer worried about the sound of it, but I am still worried about how much they fittered around with the dialogue/story line.
The story line shouldn't be very much touched at all.
As a rule of thumb, I think we can expect that much of the "sung dialogue" was turned into spoken prose -- you can see by what's not on the soundtrack to get a good idea. The rhymes were removed, I believe, so it's going to be straight dialogue, and sound normal. That means a lot of the words will be new. But you can get the same idea out of spoken word, I guess. It's a different medium -- and I get the feel that this WAS done to ease the transition.
Technically, it's not lip-synching, because historically that implies that they weren't singing. They were singing live on the set in sych with the music tracks, but that audio wasn't recorded.
Sorry, I see lip-synch and think Milli Vanilli and Ashlee Simpson.
I really like I Should Tell You, almost better than the original. Daphne sounded really strained on that song, while Rosario definitely holds her own against Adam.
but we can also assume on added scenes (like with april) having completely made up dialogue
So stuff like, "December 24th, 9pm, eastern standard time. From here on in I shoot without a script...." and that whole opening is most likely going to be spoken dialogue? i can live with that.
**Update** I've officially become more excited about the movie than I've ever been. lol. Can't wait until the 23rd now.
Well, yeah, zz.
So question: Without You. Does Adam sing down that low a lot? I still can't believe he got down there!
Quick question... I just downloaded from itunes.... i'm just on tango: maureen.... actually it is still downloading... but when anyone else downloaded, did they get some other random song too? It all of a sudden started downloding "Every Ship must Sail" by Blue Merle... Just wondering if this happened to anyone else - sorry to threadjack.
by the way... I'm liking it so far... tango is really cool, LMC is a little too different to me... loved RENT though
thanks

Glad to hear some of you really like OTM...I was hearing bad things, and it was making me sad.
As far as how well the original story and content will be kept intact, come on...it's Chris Columbus. He's all about keeping things intact, especially when he is a big a REnthead as we all are. If anything, he was critisized for keeping the Harry Potter movies too much like the books, in ways they should have been altered.
Mr. Jamie Wilinstien, I downloaded from iTunes and nothing like that happened.
lol, nope, Mr., didn't have that problem with mine. that's bizarre. free song, I guess? as long as it didn't replace any of the songs from rent and they didn't charge you extra, I guess it's your song to enjoy.
I happen to love all of the cuts. They're very appropriate for the movie. And new orchestrations! In love with them. Not for the stage show, but for the movie, they're great. Everyone sounds great here. I like Rosario's rock edge for Mimi, it works. And everyone else sounds great. I don't think people should get too worked up about all of the changes in lyrics and added/deleted dialogue. We all know it's necessary, we don't want another Phantom mishap, do we? Judging from the soundtrack, it's going to make one great movie. And I know my eyes won't be dry by the time they sing "Finale B." Hell, I'll be bawling when Anthony sings "Halloween," which has become one of my new favorite tracks, it's so haunting. Ah, cannot wait.

hey all -
Long time no talk to many of you that I know.
I've been crazy busy, but I wanted to join in the excitement of the soundtrack discussion since it comes out today! Listening to the 30-sec clips on iTunes, I will make presumption that I enjoy some of the recording techniques used by the engineer to give RENT a more "rock" feel and less "musical theatre". However, as pretty as people say Rosario's voice sounds on this soundtrack, it is grossly autotuned. Pitch-bending is used everywhere on her lines and it's blatantly obvious. It's truly a shame too, because I think she'll be great in the role, if not wonderful - but I can just tell that she would never have the vocal prowess to pull off Mimi onstage.
I am truly excited about the release of this soundtrack along with the opinions of the reviewers and the general public.
oh..also..Anthony Rapp is wonderful.
Well, that's the beauty of film, leomaxfrank. You don't actually have to perform the role 8 times a week to play it well on film. Do you think Renee could perform in Chicago on Broadway? Natalie Wood in West Side Story? Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls? Ohk, bad example.

No, Mr.Music - I totally agree with you and understand the situation. I was just hoping that she could I guess. I can actually tolerate the 30 sec clip of Out Tonight. You can just tell she's "touched up".
and p.s. I don't think Renee could do Roxie once on stage :)
Haha, neither do I.
O and I understand your sentiments.

8 weeks is entirely too far away.
How does Taye sound on the recording?
The "You'll See" clip was not enough to garner serious opinion.
I always thought his voice was one of the most dynamic from the original recording.
I think he sounds fine. Someone earlier on this thread complained that Taye didn't sing enough. But really, when you think about it, Benny really doesn't sing all that much in the show. Personally, I wanted more Angel/Wilson. But whatever, as I said, I love the cuts, you just have to sacrifice some fun things. But yes, Taye sounds fine.
~Steven
Thanks.
So you're saying that Angel doesn't sing enough?
I was initially rather put out by what sounds like a complete lack of energy from Taye at the beginning of LVB... but I dunno... it's grown on me a bit. I guess he really COULD be broken up about the dog and it sapped all his energy? lol... *shrugs*
Also, all the cut dialogue makes me REALLY REALLY curious what's changed in the script. I'm sure they just cut out a lot of stuff to make sure nothing gave away plot, didn't make sense, etc. Still... I want it to be November 23rd NOW.

Personally, I love the soundtrack. By way of attempting to become rocked-out rather than BROADWAY, it succeeds with flying colors. I don't really understand the grips with LMC--is it only because it is different from the OBC? I daresay I almost like the delivery in the soundtrack BETTER...
But I might be crucified for that. I like them both the same, really.
Its the little changes that start to get you around the 10th listen, like they changed, mimi still loves rodger is rodger really jealous to... mimi still loves you...
As most of you know, I am by no means a Rent fan. However, I just listened to all the clips on iTunes, and I think that the Soundtrack is a lot cleaner and crisper than the Cast Recording.
It sounds more professional. Everyone sounds pretty much the same. Athony still is too whiney for me to handle. Idina, Taye, Jesse, Adam and Wilson all sounds good. I especially like the way Jesse sounded in I'll Cover You (reprise). Tracie is a fine Joanne it would seem. But I think the thing i like the most about it is NOT having to hear Daphne Rubin-Vega. I think Rosario sounds 100% better. Out Tonight, the few times I've listened to the cast recording, always gave me a headache and I pretty much hated that song. Rosario made the 30 second clip somewhat bearable. However, this is probably just me. Listening to the clips reminded me of why I don't like Rent. However, I am probably going to go see the movie, b/c I think its wonderful that nearly 10 years after its conception, they were able to make a film with almost the entire original cast intact. Chalk one up for the hometeam!
