Interesting message from Telecharge re A Steady Rain

"Dear Telecharge.com Patron:

You are receiving this email because you have ordered tickets for A STEADY RAIN at the Schoenfeld Theatre.

Please be advised that the curtain rises promptly at the time printed on your tickets. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management. "

I'm guessing this is being sent out because of the incident recently where a woman was late to the show and was a bit vocal in complaining about not being seated right away.

It's such a shame that some people need to have such things spelled out for them.

Probably an after incident reminder, but it's not the first time. For The Year of Magical Thinking, they made it clear that there was no late seating. And for a few other plays they've made it clear that you won't be seated until a certain point in the production.

Now, as long as it's enforced, we'll be fine. I'm just glad they're attempting to do something about latecomers. If only every theater would do this.

I agree nealb 1. According to an article I read about that incident, the woman said that she'd been looking forward to seeing the play. Seems to me if she had been looking forward to it that much she would have been in her seat on time.

People are so stupid. Everyone else in the theatre got there on time...... That's all it takes - 1 idiot to ruin it for everyone else.

I agree that the woman who in question was completely wrong. But you shouldn't paint with some wide strokes. Not every person who's late is an idiot or stupid. Sometimes things cannot be helped. I hate being late and I can think of twice when I was late and a third time when I made it by the skin of my teeth. Not because I didn't give myself enough time but because a train derailed or such an incident like that. I like at 5:30pm for an 8pm show once and got to my seat moments before the lights dimmed.

Oh, I completely agree with you. Absolutely. And, like you said...you got there right when the show started - you didn't disturb the actors on stage.

You're not the type of person who would create a scene, and disturb everyone like she did... I'm sure if you did get there late, after the show started, you'd be a mature person and wait to be seated and not make any sound/commotion and take your seat when the usher could seat you.

re: Interesting message from Telecharge re A Steady Rain

I have seen similar messages on the site on telecharge for a given show itself, never have I seen one that was sent out via email.

It's funny. There was one time where I was part of the late seating crowd at a performance of Phantom. Just like Eris, it was due to a situation that was beyond my control and normally I would not show up late at all. But, regardless, I tried to do my best to see if I could be in SRO for respect of the other patrons who were there who got there on time. Never have I gotten so much lip from an usher for trying to do a good deed before.

A few years ago when my mother and I bought tickets for SWEENEY TODD (starring La LuPone), we received an email stating that latecomers wouldn't be seated for the first 30 minutes of the production (aka until the first blackout). And they held fast to that. Some theaters don't.

I've only been late to a show twice. Once was a train issue when I still lived in New Jersey.

The other was when I saw Cyrano -- I was sitting in my apartment, just home from a business trip and thinking I still had plenty of time to grab some dinner before the show when I suddenly realized it was a Tuesday, meaning the curtain was at 7. It was 6:42. I somehow managed to travel 120 blocks and get to the theater by about 7:05 and they sat me right away (I was on an aisle, so it was easy). There are always latecomers whenever I do the 7 p.m curtain shows, but that night, they were constantly streaming in for the next hour, so I was in good company at least. re: Interesting message from Telecharge re A Steady Rain

Hamlet has signs on the doors of the theater and by the box office as well as the Telecharge notification, as did Sweeney Todd with Patti LuPone. I think it's definitely a good thing, I just wish more theaters would enforce it...when I saw Mary Poppins someone came in during Supercali... which is about 20 minutes before the end of the first act and was seated, although she was in a box so it wasn't too disturbing I guess.

I've only been late once, for "Brooklyn the Musical," the second time I saw it. It was awful, major train delay. Thankfully, we only missed 3 minutes or so.

So you'd be late to a production without the notification? Who's the idiot?

"So you'd be late to a production without the notification? Who's the idiot?"

There's a difference when you are late because of a delay and when you don't care if you are late, think the whole world revolves around you and are making a huge disturbance (as the lady apparently did).

This notification is more for the latter. People are still clueless about theater etiquette.

People will still come in late no matter how many announcements are made. Ditto with using a cell phone or taking pictures. people will do what they want no matter what or who it bothers. It is called being selfish.

I got this notice for both STEADY RAIN and HAMLET. Also received it for MARY STUART - if you remember how that started, it made great sense to keep audience distractions to a minimum.

I got that email when I booked a 7pm Speed-The-Plow.

Cut to 7:24, when the lights finally dimmed to start the show... people were still being seated.

re: Interesting message from Telecharge re A Steady Rain

Millie, my question was because nealb1's comment seemed to say that someone being late and causing a fuss, now nobody could be late thus spoiling the ability to be late. There are in fact ways to avoid being late, even with traffic. Leave your house way earlier than you think you need to. If you're coming in from out of town on a train or bus, don't take one that is scheduled in an hour or less before curtain. Plan accordingly. I know I would rather wander around the theater district for a while than risk getting stuck in a train or in traffic. I was always taught to leave a good deal more time to get somewhere than you need to in order to make sure you're on time.

re: Interesting message from Telecharge re A Steady Rain

Sometimes people do leave a great deal of time in advance and still are late because of train issues. And I am not talking about people planning to leave one hour before curtain.

Once on my way to the city, my train was canceled 45 minutes into the ride because of heavy rains, and the tracks on the way to Grand Central were flooded. Not to mention I already completed half of the trip there. Because of the flooding, there was only one track open apparently. Issues like that can make you much later than you anticipate, even if you do leave earlier than you think you need to.

You cannot deny that you may run into circumstances beyond your control that may unfortunately cause you to arrive late. This thread is more focused on those who think the world revolves around them, have no concept of time and think they can show up when they want and be seated immediately at their request.

Perhaps. :)

The last part, however, the sense of entitlement, is what came across in nealb1's comment about this "ruining it". It does read as if he thinks he's entitled to be last but this woman who made a fuss is "ruining" that ability.

I once took a bus that left around 5.20 pm and was supposed to take 20 minutes. I barely made the 7.30 curtain.
