Two girls at Sister Act last night tried to get a refund simply because they didn't like the show. One of the two girls in the pair told the other one that she lied to the usher about having to leave for an emergency to see if the theatre would give her a refund. However, she was annoyed to find out that because it was for an emergency, that they wouldn't refund but would give her a sip to past date her tickets. So, towards the end of the intermission, they were talking about how they would take the letter and were coming up with a convoluted plot to sell the past date tickets and the letter to someone off ebay etc to get their money back.
As the lights were going down for the start of the second act, they said that they were just going to stay and get the letter on the way out. I didn't want to be the one to tell them that if they stayed they weren't going to get any letter for past dating at all. Not to mention the fact that if they were having that bad a time, they should just have gotten up and left rather then talking loudly and bothering everyone around them. When I turned to them to tell them to be quiet they clearly had the attitude of if we aren't going to have a good time here, why should anyone else.

People are scum.
Would have liked to have a fly on the wall when they tried to get their post date letter from the box office, as it's usually closed by the time evening shows are over!

Posted: 10/16/11 at 2:39pmThe sense of entitlement amazes me. They bought the ticket, they aren't entitled to anything except seeing the show. Depending how the tickets were going to be post-dated, there's a good chance they can't sell them anyways (if they use their name.)

Dramamama, I agree with you that they are scum. Considering that we all go to the theatre here, we go in with the realization that if we are seeing something new, that there is a chance that we might not like it. It's something that happens. But, at least for me, if I don't like a show I walk away realizing that I go to the theatre a lot and I am not bond to like everything that I see. It happens.
And, don't even get me started on the woman who was sitting next to me. The one who was eating a peanut filled chocolate bar ( I am pretty allergic to peanuts. ) When I told her that and that the smell of her candy bar was making me ill ( not to mention the fact that she shouldn't have it out in the theatre) she said that I was full of it because I wasn't eating the candy. Between Little Ms. Entitlement behind me and Captain Clueless next to me making me sick, I wanted to scream.
Also, not to mention the fact that My local 1 train from Penn Station turned into an express and I had to get off at 42nd rather then 50th. The walk is not something that I would have minded usually, nor is it long or a problem. However, I was unaware about the people from Occupation Wall Street taking over Times Square. It made a quick walk for me a very slow and long one.
Sorry for venting, I just had a very bad day yesterday, and I thought that going to the theatre would help me take my mind off things and make things a little better. However, all this stuff happened as well.

So...you're so allergic to peanuts that the mere smell of them was making you feel sick?
Also, since the Broadway allows you to bring snacks and drinks to your seats, you really can't make the case that she shouldn't have candy out. Regardless of whether or not you approve of snacking at a show--I don't like it, personally--it all comes down to the theatre's policy.

I didn't go to any shows yesterday cause I knew that times square was going to be a mess and I didn't want to be anywhere near those people.

AC126748, you're right. I mean, it does seem like we agree that we are both against the whole idea of eating in the theatre. And, it was not right of me to make that argument that snacks shouldn't be in the theatre if, at intermission, there is a vendor hawking off drinks and snacks like we are at a baseball game and not a Broadway theatre.
And, believe it or not, since the nose and the mouth are connected it is possible for someone who is allergic to something be set off by the smell of it. Personally speaking, I was a little surprised that it was setting me off ever so slightly, I had thought that my allergy had gotten a little less worse as time went on.
And, Broadway Joe, you have no idea how much I was kicking myself between the walk from the 42nd street station all the way to The Broadway. I realized after I got on the train, that the 2 was running express on the local line due to there being construction. And, according to the sign that tells you when the next train is coming, it said that there was a 1 train only a few min away. I was kicking myself for not waiting an extra three min for the next train. That time wouldn't have made a difference and would have gotten me to the theatre with enough time to get a coffee at Crumbs before the show.

No.
You don't get a refund just because you don't like something. And this case all comes down to personal taste and subjectivity.

No because you have to be an absolute idiot to walk in thinking that theres no chance of you not liking the show and feeling shafted when you dont. When you see a show...you are taking a risk on liking it/not liking it. Kinda simple really. Dont see how anyone could feel otherwise.

Why is it that in years past you'd never hear about peanut allergies and nowadays it seems you can't go more than a few days without someone claiming to be so allergic to peanuts that merely being in the same room with them is dangerous to their health?
These ladies had EVERY right to feel shafted in seeing a show that should have flopped in the first month it was open on Broadway.
Of course they have that right. What they don't have is the right to get a refund after they've already seen the show simply because they hated it.

Posted: 10/16/11 at 5:49pmWow. I guess you don't know anyone that has a serious allergy and therefore it is ok to imply that the OP is somehow faking or exagerating. Good for you. I hope you never know or love anyone that does so you can continue to make such arrogant statements.

Posted: 10/16/11 at 5:52pmI don't think Cape's question is unfounded. I don't think I'd ever met anyone with a peanut allergy five years ago, and now it seems like every third person can't even be in the same room as a bowl of Planter's. But that's not the point of this thread, is it?

I was skeptical, too, AC, but peanut allergies do seem to be on the rise. Radically so in children. No one knows why for sure but this link presents some theories...

Posted: 10/16/11 at 7:41pmFor what it's worth, I was diagnosed around thirteen years ago. But, at the time, while having a peanut allergy wasn't unheard of, there were no where near as many people who had them as there are now.

Hey Winston -
This sounds like you had as good of a time as I did waiting for an hour at "Dreams of Flying, Dreams of Falling" for you to show up to buy my tickets.
You never showed up, never called, and never emailed.

And the list of minorities that AC hates continues to grow.
Surprise, surprise.
