Saw a very nice, intimate production of Into The Woods tonight at Writers Theatre in Glencoe. Didn't quite realize how far out of the city it would be when I followed the google maps directions to take a bus, but well worth it & the train back to downtown was shorter.
The fellow playing the Baker, Michael Mahler, is also a composer who has a popular musical about the Cubs baseball team running in the city right now. The whole cast is great, & it is performed in a small theatre in the round so you get to see everyone right up close. The Witch is played by Bethany Thomas who has a really bluesy mezzo voice, & isn't as whiney as the classic performance from Bernadette.
Not familiar with the area at all, but there is a huge beautiful botanical garden up the road.
Also want to give a shout out to a restaurant around the block from the theatre I stumbled upon, An Apple A Day, where I had one of the best meals so far during my vacation in Chicago - & really inexpensive compared to restaurants downtown.

I thought this was going to be about Roxie and Velma taking over the woods.
If you go down in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today
You'd better go in disguise!
For every gangster's moll that ever there was
Will gather there for certain
Because today's the day that
Roxie & Velma have their picnic
