Posted: 7/4/04 at 7:53pmI love the original "Into the Woods" -- Bernanette Peters is freaking awesome! And Ben Wright has a great voice -- what ever happened to him? I don't get the big appeal of the Baker's Wife as a character, but Joanna does have a very nice voice, and perfect timing. But Peters! She is sooo amazing. I love her facial expressions in "Last Midnight". I don't see how Williams could come close to her. But I do have to admit I've never listened to it.

Willaims pales in comparasion to Bernadette.
And I've always found Ben Wright's voice rther annoying...and on the "Into the Woods" DVD he breathes completely wrong during 'Giants in the Sky', and that is a pet peeve of mine.

just click on the bwayworld radio link under "Features" to listen to it.
I love Ben Wright -- bad breathing at all. It almost makes me like him better, for some odd reason. :)

Ben was miles above Adam Wylie.
Yes! Oh i couldn't agree more. It really sound like he hasn't sang a lick in his life. i think it was his minor tv stardom that got him the part.

Posted: 7/5/04 at 5:22pmI loved Adam on PICKET FENCES. That's one of my alltime favorite shows. But no, he was nowhere as good as Ben.

I loved both productions and also thought Kerry O'Malley shined. She was beyond amazing and brought a special warmth to the Baker's Wife.
Laura Benanti outshined Kim Crosby.

BITE YOUR TONGUE!
Both were great, but I will always hold a place in my heart for Kim.

J:
Sorry that Sondheim's challenging, witty, creative and unconventional music is upsetting to you.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled, perfect Broadway music....

"Normal" is in the eye of the beholder, J. ALW has more mainstream appeal (or had, at least) because his melodies sound vaguely like songs you've heard before. They're familiar, and therefore comforting. Sondheim's melodies move in ways you don't expect, but ways that are beautiful nonetheless. They challenge the ear and expand it. Some people find that unpleasant. They'd rather listen to "normal" music- to the same old thing- their entire lives. They're missing out. ALW is good, but Sondheim is brilliant.
And to get back on topic (sorta), Joanna Gleason rocks my socks on the OBC of Into the Woods. Her delivery of "If the end is right/ It justifies the beans!" cracks me up every time.

Granted, I LOVE Webber and like his writing style better and will defend him to the death (I know Kung Pow Fat), Sondheim does stuff that is a precurser to Jason Robert Brown (Love Him), Jonathan Larson (MAJORLY Love Him) and so on. The Sondheim musical I like the best is PASSION (which most sondheim fans hate), but if you like ALW's ASPECTS OF LOVE, you will like PASSION. INTO THE WOODS runs a close second. I mean, "Agony" and "Agony (Reprise)" has to be one of the most brilliant songs written.
