Irish Rep: The Weir

We are set to see Irish Rep's new Zoom production of The Weir.  It's free to stream at designated times through 25 July (reservations required but I don't know how limited it is) A review/article said that the actors were filmed in different locations with green screens - so it might be that the "final" version being streamed looks like it is on a single set.  I don't know. Maybe someone here has watched. This is, apparently, Irish Rep's second zoom show - having previously done Molly Sweeney - which we did not see.We saw a production in London = and it is a spooky show but certainly it is a lot - I mean a lot - of talking.

Well, that was bloody fabulous. We'd seen The Weir in London at Wyndham's. in 2014.  And this brought back so many of those same feelings of comfort, discomfort, and eeriness.

I thought Dan Butler's Jack was the heart and soul of this production. Oddly, I guess he was the newcomer to the cast! But everyone was so good. 

The direction was creative - and while not completely seamless - made it feel more like being in a theatre. 

I have not yet seen the steaming production but saw the original Irish Rep production this is based on and it was easily, on that tiny stage, the best Weir I have ever seen. 

However, Billy Carter (late of Sing Street) is not repeating his role as the bartender (the character name escapes me at the mo' and I loved him so much (he was the therapist in Irish Rep's Mathew Broderick revival of Shining City as well) I'm a little reluctant to see it again...
