re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

I literally just laughed out loud at that. I don't think he has gotten to that status yet.

OOOMMMMMMMMGGGGGG I LUUUUUUUVVVVV NORBURT SOOOO MUCH!

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

If you explain what you mean by that, I will try to answer? Do you mean he's going to become a household name (or at least well-known) soon, oh yeah!

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Idina Menzel isn't a household name.

I don't think so... How many "WhEn iS NoRbeRt LeAvIng DRS?!!!????!!!111one!!?" threads have you seen, lately? Also, have there been any threads that make fun of the "When is Norbert leaving DRS?" threads, yet?

However, like Idina Menzel, he is definetely rising in the theatre world, and making more of a name for himself.

Idina Menzel is by no means a household name. Not by a long shot. LOL

Well, he DOES have the built-in Wicked fanbase... I agree about not seeing "Norbert Rox My Sox!" threads peppering BW, though. (And I really hope they don't- much as I love Norbert- BW can barely handle ONE Idina.. re: Is Norbert the New Idina? )

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

The only person I can think that is a household name that is broadway is Lizzi Minelli (Cabaret) and even though it was only a movie...I know many of my friends have no idea what broadway really is (assume it is gay men and all the steroetypes) know about her in Cabaret and all have heared of Les Miserables :)

Idina is getting there...movie will only help (rent)

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Ive yet to see Norbert in DRS but nonetheless (from the OBC, illegal videos *I mean...not illegal videos re: Is Norbert the New Idina? etc), I think he deserves to be the next Idina. I love them both and think theyre both extremley talented so if he becomes the new Idina, I would be thrilled.

Where do you live, and how do I go about moving there? After watching Arrested Development in English, I realized that most of my friends have no idea who Liza Minnelli (honestly, the woman has a song about her name, and STILL people get it wrong) is. So, I'm kinda hesitant to call her a household name...

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

No, he's his own person......

I think he will win the Tony Award this year, and that the majority of people/posters will agree that he derserved it......Unlike Idina, for the record, I am okay about her winning, although it was a surprise but a pleasant surprise!!!!!!

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Elizabeth_DeBris, you watched Arrested Development in English? You have the best teacher EVER! Arrested Development is my absolute favorite show. It's completely brilliant comedy, but it hasn't gotten great ratings, so anyone that's putting it out there to win over new viewers is my hero.

Ahem. Back on topic, I don't think this question was meant as them being a "household name"- or at least well-known in the Broadway community. It could be in reference to an obsessive fangirl following, it could also mean that he's now using Idina hands when he sings.

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Broadway people who are household names:

Lithgow
Many of the Spam boyz (although you could argue stunt casting, I guess)
Jesse Martin

JOHN LITHGOW I just realized, your last name is Butz! Both "Norbert" AND "Butz" are in your name! You must have gotten picked on a lot as a child!

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

I wish I understood exactly what this question means, but as I dont, I would have to comment that Norbert is finally getting the recognition he deserves. I have been a huge fan of his since "cabaret" almost 9 years ago, and finally, his genious is being honored. I hope he wins the TONY this year, he deserves it. I sure hope he is becoming a well known actor, but in my book, he has always been the one actor I always remembered, and that is why he is my favorite!

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

I am interpreting this as being... is he going to be the one to win the Tony that we didn't expect to? No one expected Idina to win it last year and she pulled it off, which was a GREAT surprise for me. I am hoping Norbert gets it too but he has tough competition with Hank, Tim, Gary, and John. That is just how I took the question but it was interesting to see the different angles people are taking on it re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

To answer Jose's question: Yes, he almost is!

I realized this when I noticed that I wasn't quite 'getting' the crazy hype around him either. And when people say that the threads about him are not quite as bad yet, all I can say is: You just wait! Wait till he wins that Tony and see the teenies go mental . re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Hmm...perhaps the difference between DRS fans and Wicked fans is the fact that those appreciating DRS most seem to be slightly less...hyper when it comes to expressing their love?

Wicked was like this huge craze that just swept Broadway. It was based on a household name (Wizard of Oz, NOT Idina, you goof!) that is instantly recognizable to the masses.

In an aspect, you can argue the same for DRS, I suppose, since it was a movie and all, but I wouldn't give it the classic, household name status. How many of you grew up and DIDN'T knnow of Oz? I mean, it used to play on TV every Thanksgiving/Christmas season! We can't say the same for DRS.

So yes, a lot of the younger generation will see Wicked over DRS. Not to mention, the content of DRS is for a slightly more mature audience. Theatre-loving parents aren't going to take their kids to see DRS when Wicked is around.

Perhaps part of the craze was also that Wicked de-virginized a lot of people when it came to theatre. I knoww a few people here in Florida who think that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread because they've seen so few shows......typically, Wicked and Lion King cross everyone's list for best musical. O-kay.... Do I like Wicked for what it is? Yes. Do I get annoyed with all the gushing? Yes. Wicked is the current craze. We must accept that. We must also be grateful that the posts have died significantly compared to even a few months ago.

I think the above is what makes DRS so much less gushed about. Many people watching it are past the stage where they gush or drool over the flash and dazzle that hooks them to the stage.

I am thrilled that so many people are beginning to love Norbert, though. My friend Jen didn't know why I adored him so much until I dragged her to the show in March. Everyone outside of that door was waiting for him, too. I'm really rooting for him to win the Tony. He is a phenomenal actor and he's finally being recognized for his talents by the Broadway District. ^_^

That is all. Sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion, however, it is the way I feel.

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

I'm not sure I know what this question is truly asking, but if it means is he going to inspire the same level of adoration among fans - specifically, young female teenage fans - as Idina, I'm a bit doubtful. There *are*, admittedly, some signs of it - an extensive "love thread" on the off-topic board, frequent gushing about him on this one - and I'm sure that will increase to some degree after the Tonys. However, the vehicle and role that really made Idina break through with young girls - "Wicked" - has a more specific and personal appeal to that demographic than Norbert with DRS. Fans who discovered Idina through "Wicked" could see their own struggles reflected in Elphaba's, so it became more than simply appreciating a performance - they identified with it to an incredible degree, and that breeds the kind of devotion that doesn't come around very often. I'm not saying Idina's only fan base is from "Wicked", or that's all her fans care about, but the fans who love her from "Wicked" are undoubtedly those who posted the most about her here.

Certainly Norbert has a great many devoted fans, but for the most part it is more a matter of appreciation rather than identification.

If that makes any sense.

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

That's the beauty of this avatar. It can mean so SO many things. (Most of those are far more entertaining than what he was really saying, but seriously, the hand gesture = love.)

Case in point, maybe he's fanning himself from all of Nobert's supposed hotness.

re: Is Norbert the New Idina? In no way do I mean any disrespect to Norbert, but I don't quite get the whole "hotness" thing. He's gifted, and funny, and kinda cuddly-cute...but not "hot" in my opinion, at least in a traditional sense. But different strokes for different folks!

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Yeah, I'd give him the cuddly-cute thing, too. That's why I said "supposed." I was playing something from L5Y for my roommate once, and she was like "wow, that guy's voice makes him sound like he'd be REALLY HOT. Is he?" It was just kind of funny. I suppose "hot" just sort of encompasses all walks of "attractive," which I do very much find Norbert.

re: Is Norbert the New Idina?

Norbert used to be really hot, but in DRS he's got that little beer-belly thing going on. Either way, I think he's hot. His eyes are gorgeous and I love his smile.
