What do you think? If he wins, will it be because of his dance skills or is his acting on par with his ballet?
Neither as Ceveris is getting the honor.
However, great dancers are also actors...they.just use their bodies to communicate. Are some excellent dancers only excellent from a technical viewpoint? Yes...most of the Billy Elliot boys. As an example.

If he wins, and I hope he does, it'll be because of the whole shootin' match. No one in any show (with the exception on Curious Incident) has to put out as much sheer energy and call on as much talent in every area as Fairchild and do it all in such an accomplished way. The only one that comes close, in my opinion, is Tony Yazbek. Further, considering this is his first theater outing let alone Broadway this warrants his win.

Would you say Fairchild is an example of this? Let's take Ceveris out of the equation for a minute and say if Fairchild won, what would he be winning for?
Take Michael Cerveris out of the equation then Tony Yazbeck would win.
I'd love to see that happen. He's the guy I'd vote for.
The award is for best performance - it is not for the best actor or the best dancer - but the person who gave the best performance (in the aggregate opinion of the voters). So, the question makes no sense.
Rephrase your question.
The award is for best performance - it is not for the best actor or the best dancer
To be clear, the award is "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical"
Exactly, best PERFORMANCE by an Actor. If he wasn't an actor, he wouldn't be in this category.
Fairchild is just as much of an actor as anyone else on Broadway this year. If you think that he's not because he's a dancer, you've got some issues.
I have a feeling he's going to win.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
So Robert Fairchild acts, sings, and dances in this performance.
Sounds like he would have a fair shot for the Tony under that context.
Gotta be as a dancer as his acting leaves a bit to be desired .
I believe he gave the best performance by an actor in a musical this year.
Congrats to Robert Fairchild winning the Drama Desk Award!
He is the best male dancer in a leading role IMO. The best leading actor in a musical is Michael Cerveris.
Woah woah slow down people. I am only posing this question after watching Theater talk's tony predictions bringing it up. It seems to be in the mind's of a few people: https://youtu.be/kNcq3d3OvPA at 18:39
What's to slow down? People are simply discussing what you brought up. Sheesh.
I was referring to the post that said the question made no sense and the one that said someone has serious issues if they didn't agree fairchild was as much of an actor as anyone else this year. Sheesh

Slightly OT, but re that Theater Talk clip, it amazes me how often I agree with Ms. Vincintelli. "Yecch"--loved that.
They're a hoot!
As much as I love Robbie Fairchild, I don't think he will win the Tony. I think Cerveris will take it (as he deserves to).
How many people have come close to winning the quadruple crown (Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and Theatre World Award) in the same season before?
I sometimes think that Drama Desk gives out at least one award to someone who might be second in line from the real winner at the Tonys. I don't think he will win the tony.
