To each his own.
She is fine. Just fine. Meaning she doesn't add nor take away anything from the show.
Now let's talk about Kelli O'Hara who not only adds something to the show but takes on one of the most demanding and challenging roles this year. This is the real Tony winner.
Sara has a very weird part, and the acting is totally over done and out there, but it's sort of called for in the show, and if you listen to the vocals, she's doing some REALLY FRICKIN HARD STUFF. Those are not easy songs to sing, and she owns them. I think she does a a really great job in the show. Not that I'd mind seeing Kelli win :)
I haven't seen any of these, but from what I hear on the cast recording, I'd love to see Sara win. Her voice is annoying? This board cracks me up!!

I hate blanket judgements, esp. ones with no qualifiers: "She can't sing or act." More accurately- not to YOUR LIKING. Clearly she can sing... she holds the tune. She has power. She can even scat without losing the song or sounding terrible, (two difficult things since I know of some VERY BAD scat singers). You are completely entitled to your opinion, but if you state it like the gospel without anything backing up the statement, it hurts your argument.

It cracks me up more that people get so crazy when someone states an opinion. Her voice can be annoying to someone, even if it isn't to you.
And on the record, I don't think Cheno is annoying. At all. And I also fined Sara's to be very pure sounding as someone mentioned earlier. Kelli should win though.
Sara has been given a silly role in a big silly show and she does a great job with it. I hate when people say something like "she can't sing." What are you on? The girl sings the freakin' roof off of the Shubert!
I'm really torn between Sara and Kelli. The roles couldn't be more different so I can't choose. I want Piazza to win as many awards as possible.
I haven't seen SPAM, so I technically shouldn't be critisizing...but I've seen the press clips, and while I'm sure she could show off some acting chops somewhere, her singing voice ROCKS...but I really want Kelli to win.
betty,
I'm not "on" anything. I just don't like how she sings, at all.

I think Sara Ramirez is over-rated. Her voice is also not my favorite thing in the world.
my opinions.
Ga-You don't have to like it but she CAN sing. She's one of the few who can sing in Spam.
Ive seen both Kelli and Sara....
Sara was good .... but really didnt do anything for me. Her part (not her) annoyed me... and although divas lament is a funny song... i couldnt help but keep thinking WHY ARE WE STOPING THE ACTION FOR THIS? I dunno... shes talented but I dont think this years Tony is hers (even if she wins it... i dont think she deserves it the most). Theres no doubt she is tony worthy... and id love to see her win in the future with a better part that really does something for the show... not just being a random part who sings really well.
Kelli is the real winner this year... her and Victoria are just pure magic on stage together... and Kelli is just stunning. Her acting is moving and well executed... her singing is beyond amazing... and she just lights up the stage. Its a better role, and she handles it exceptionally well... which is why i am rooting for her.
Hopefully after SPAM sara finds a part that allows her to do more than act silly. Id be first in line to cheer her on!

When I saw Spamalot as wasn't as blown away by her vocals as I wanted to be, but she was really funny.
Speaking of hype...or a complete lack thereof, what's with the complete lack of Kelli talk? I saw Piazza and Kelli was AMAZING. I was sitting there watching her and just kept thinking "Where are all the threads saying THIS girl should win the Tony??!" because she should.
Sarah was good, but Kelli blew me away. I really hope she takes the Tony.
my sentiments exactly andyf! (i did start a kelli appreciation thread on the off topic board...but people let it die. I might just have to bring that back...) :::end threadjack::::
Kelli sings like a bird, she is stunning in the role. She presents this seemingly beautiful but flawed character. I don't know, I mean, her facial expressions totally had me enthralled with her character in combination with that gorgeous soprano. She lights up the stage and deserves this Tony for a very unusual role played to perfection. In addition to her and Victoria, wouldn't it be wonderful if Matthew Morrison won for best featured actor? I mean, these roles are classic Broadway musical drama. Broadway has lacked shows like Piazza for years and the genre in itself deserves its due.
I tell you why I very unfrotunately think Kelli will not win the Tony (and I do hope I'm wrong, but doubt it).
SPAM will not win any acting awards. It "may" win Best Musical but I think that's a real toss up between Spam and DRS and..to a lesser degree Piazza. Spam will take a few tech awards but def not any musical awards (all going to Piazza).
The Wing wants to give Spam some sort of recognition besdies the possible Musical. Giving it to Sara would fill that bill. And since Clark is going to walk away with Best Actress, they won't feel bad giving it to Sara eventhough, after talking to a friend, Kelli has the most respect of any of the other nominees. People know she does a supurb and amazing job playing a difficult role and sings it beautifully. But giving it to Sara would "spread it around". There's also another possible reason they would want to give it to Sara but I'll leave that one alone.
I would love for Vicki, Kelli, and Matt to win. They deserve it! I wouldn't mind Piazza winning, either.
haha...not biased at ALL are ya betty? lol
I would love it if Kelli won. She is a very integral part of Piazza. It's a very difficult role to act and sing, and she does do it justice. I wouldn't mind seeing her win at all.

I'm pulling for Kelli. Now she DESERVES it!
Maybe - she has little to do in Spamalot. That's why Kelli O'Hara deserves the Tony, she's just as good (or better), and has a LOT to do in Piazza. What a voice! I did see them both perform.
ShuQ-How could you tell?
I tell you, a week ago I was all about Sara winning but then I saw Piazza and now I know Kelli deserves. I hate all the politics involved, give it to the most deserving.
Exactly the samee here. I also saw Kelli in Dracula - she didn't have anything to work with there.... She is spectacular in Piazza, a play I didn't expect to like (wife really love dit, expects the play to win).

Ramirez was marvalous is "A Class Act" (in a much less over the top role).
That being said I think to compare the two performers is absurd. The two shows are completly different. Piazza is a muscial drama and "Spamalot" is a farce. The only way to compare the two performers is to have them switch roles and see who does a better job in the other role.
By the way, I enjoyed both shows.
Yes, but Kelli has a LOT more demanding role in Piazza than Sara has in Spamalot. Tonys should be based on performances in shows they are in. Kelli is amazing - I don't think she deserved one in Dracula, for example, due to what she had to do in the role. But she does in her current role. I've seen all 3.
