Kelli's role is so much more layered than Sara's. The Lady of the Lake has no character arc. Clara Johnson is a real character. She has experienced traumatic experiences. She is supposedly a "special child." She has emotions and motivation. She is central to the plot. Without her actions and feelings, there would be no story in Piazza. I'd love for someone to make such a case for the Lady of the Lake. It's such an irreverent, unnecessary role. I really could have done without her. And I don't see where acting is necessary for the role, either.

I'm not saying Sara is not talented. I just didn't think the role is Tony worthy. I haven't seen Sara, I've only seen her understudy. She was flat out bad.

Although I did not see every show, I was rooting For Celia. The Light in the Piazza number on the Tony's was enough to make me not want to see it, though I'm sure Kelli is wonderful in the show. But, so was Celia and Joanna Gleason.
When Sara won, I thought her speech was funny and clever : "I'd like to thank Clariton".
But it wasn't until I saw her Tony performance that made me fall in love with her. She has one of the most unique and powerful voices. (Her wailing at the end was so friggin' awesome!)I can't wait to get her other recordings - and she has actually made me interested in seeing Spamalot. (Of course, I'll have to wait for the tour).
Over rated? She's just as overrated as Norbert, Victoria, and Dan Fogler.

"but like everything else in Spamalot, is she over-hyped? Does she really deserve the TONY?"
What a flattering and completely loaded question. Sounds like you already made up your mind, so why ask?
Why are shows usually hyped? Because many people like it. If a show is universally hated and panned, then there is no hype. It has to come from somewhere. I thought she deserved the Tony when I saw her in the show during it's Chicago run. But that is no indication of whether or not you will personally like her performance. Some people like the show and some don't. Big surprise.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 10:48amI think Sara has a gorgeous voice and is capable of better than her role in Spamalot, as entertaining as it is. Personally, I think Kelli went through a wider range of emotions and 'played a part' rather than 'gave a performance.'

Posted: 6/7/05 at 11:09amI agree and thought that Kelli deserved it more for her performance in that particular part. I also saw Kelli in Dracula, and of course no nomination there - it didn't showcase her talent like Piazza does. Sara may have just as much talent, but it's not a Tony part as far as I'm concerned.

I would like for it to be acknowledged that it is possible for someone to be just as wonderful in a fun-only role as another who has a "layered" role.
What are the use of layers if it all isn't deliriously fun, anyway? This is the theatre, not geology.
By the way, I'm not dissing Kelli. I'm obsessed with her in Piazza. I'm just making a point.

Sara's award for Spam was just for the Spam hype. You compare most of the others in the catagory and what she really does is run around and mug. Sure it's suppose to be comedy, and she has funny moments, but nothing you couldn't see the resident diva at a summer stock company do.
And I loved how innocent she played with the her Tony dress. Like she was really suprised she was falling out of it! Yeah..that was totally planned.
And not to mention her lenghty absence from the show and then..ta da....here she is belting away.
She didn't deserve the awar for "Best Featured Actress". But the mistake has been made.

Kelli O'Hara- Light in the Piazza
I love Sara, I do but Kelli has a role that's a lot more complicated and needs more voice.
That being said, it is true that you don't need a really complicated role to win. Kristin Chenoweth won for YAGMCB and her role was comedic rather than dramatic. I guess if your character is really....CHARACTER there's a win...know what I mean?
That being said as well, I still wish Kelli won. But congrats to Sara, I love her too.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 3:29pmIt's easier to be recognized for a comedic role than a dramatic role. Dramatic role, people really need to see the emotions and need to sob their eyeballs out. But a character role, they get a laugh out of it everytime because that's the way the character is structured. It's much more difficult to impress an audience with a dramatic role because it's just so much more complicated. But if you take a character role and do nothing at all, you'll put the audience to sleep. Both are equally hard to portray, but a comedic role is just more appealing to the audience.

Way Wicked,
Do you really wish to sound so... way wicked? Relax. Both young ladies work extremely hard. Sara Ramirez is the 2005 Tony award Winner 2005 for Best Featured ACTRESS in a musical. NOT writer, composer or director. ACTRESS!! Don't bastardize the legitimacy of her win. Sara has a special GIFT. She is a SUPERSTAR. Her electricity doesn't strike too often. Embrace and enjoy her light!!!
Peace,

I've seen all 5 ladies who were nominated, and I'd say it would be between RAmirez and O'Hara. I don't think just because RAmirez's role isn't dramatic that it is less challenging than what O'Hara does in Piazza.
In terms of being overrated, I think a lot of thigs are overrated on this board, but still, Ramirez is a talent, but certainly not the end all of musical theatre.

Some people are so easily seduced by a belter. I think she is talented but I don't think she's all that.
