Much Kudos and props to Sister Act and Patina Miller? However am I the only one who really isn't all that impressed with her voice? I mean girl can sing no question otherwise she wouldn't be in the role. I know she did it in London for two years, but every time I hear her sing she just doesn't do it for me and she sounds like she strains ALOT.
Her best vocal, without a doubt, is on the cast recording.
To me, she's a lot like Aaron Tveit - lots of energy, hits the marks, but nothing unusual, surprising, or special going on.
It's not just you.
And every time I say something negative the Patinafiles beat me up.
She is making an impressive Broadway debut but she lacks the comic chops of
Whoopi Goldberg and the voice chops and uniqueness of a Jennifer Holiday,
Melba Moore, Audra MacDonald, Jennifer Hudson or Anika Nona Rose.
Hate mail to follow.
Her best vocal, without a doubt, is on the cast recording.
Honestly, her vocals in London were comparable to her cast recording vocal. She was outstanding there, but she didn't really have the character nailed down yet. I think she's strained her voice from doing the show so much, but she's definitely developed a much more thorough character at this point, and her voice is still good. It's just not "trumpets blaring" good like it used to be.
For what it's worth, she was awesome in Hair in the park. She was one of only 2 things I liked about that production. She sang the sh*t out of Aquarius and White Boys.
Her voice seems to have changed since the London production through working it so much. I am always worried about that E (which, undoubtably is a hard note) at the end of "Fabulous, Baby". I don't think it is bad though.
I feel like some of the problems that people see in her performance are ingrained into the role. The role requires someone who is funny, sassy, brash, and in good voice until the middle of Act 2 with the title song and on where there is some tenderness. I think she did the role really well though.
