We don't need to see it to know what the story is about and what kind of music it has. I've seen the videos and I've seen the movie. There is no need to make this into a musical. The music is absolutely dreadful.
I don't know if it's fair to say "the music is absolutely dreadful." Maybe to say that you didn't like the demo songs or the music in the clips, but you haven't heard the whole score. So to make a generalization about the whole score just isn't right. I think it's wrong to worship a show based on only hearing a demo CD and seeing a clip (and I'm downright confused about people who are listening LITTLE MERMAID as one of their favorites when there's nothing there but the artwork for it), but it's also wrong to say that the music is dreadful when you probably haven't heard all of it.
The fun thing about people who bash shows - and there are a few on this site who do nothing much BUT bash shows - is the glee I get watching them turn all Homer Simpson when the shows go on to be big hits (and yes, even I hate the fact that Vicked is a hit).
So throw every curse you can against this show. I somehow think it's teflon-coated (just like Vicked) and I'll enjoy watching you do a Basil Faulty for several years to come.....
Time to order the beta-blockers and lasix......
Ok.
I personally think the whole idea of movies being musicals is crazy.
From what I've seen, I'm not too impressed. The music sounds annoying to generic at best, and I hate the yrics (what I've heard). It's not on my list of showws to see, and I'm not too excited for it.
Judging from the clips that I've seen and the demos I've heard, the music isn't too bad (although I hated what I saw of the "Bend and Snap" number). In fact, I think that the music to "Omigod You Guys" is really catchy. What gets me are the lyrics, which IMHO need work.
It'll be interesting to see how the NY critics treat this show. I guess only time will tell how long it'll last. Personally I don't think it's gonna become a mega-hit that'll run for years and years like some people here seem to think.
Side note: This is kind of off the topic, but did anyone else find it funny that David Rockwell seemed to take the staircase from Lawrence's house in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, paint it pink, and stick it into Legally Blonde?
Thank you! I don't understand the raving for this show. I mean, didn't the show just open in previews a few days ago? People say "you can't bash a show if you haven't seen it", the same statement applies for raving for a show you haven't seen. All I see is raving from people who haven't seen it yet.
This is yet another show in which I'm the age group, and I don't want to be anywhere near it. And besides for the teeny boppers, I don't think there's a strong audience for this.
This show is just a reflection of what Broadway is turning into. If this is a good change or a bad change, time will only tell.

I've seen it---twice. If you haven't seen it, you don't have any credibility to bash, or praise it. Sorry, but bashing or praising based on a demo or clips just doesn't make your case.
People have the right to bash everything about the show from sun-up to sun-down without seeing it.
If one mourns the overall general lack of creative thought and original ideas on the Broadway Stage already, this sure isn't going to draw them in and make a fan out of them.
If the powers that be deem it absolutely necessary to produce re-hashed big screen material, is it too much to ask that they at least start with some of the all time great films of all time and then work their way down to the "Legally Blondes" of the genre?!?!?

LOL! The same could be said about books being turned into musicals. Surely there are classics that would deserve to be musicals before other novels, such as "Wicked".
Sorry, but bashing or praising based on a demo or clips just doesn't make your case.
Exactly my point.
But when Lestat was bashed by people who haven't seen it, there was no problem. Now that Legally Blonde is bashed by people who've seen it, a HUGE issue arises. I don't understand why this came up now. Legally Blonde does not have superiority over other shows, especially only after a few previews.
I am just commenting on what I know of the show.
And I thought Lestat was a somewhat enjoyable show.

Dancin' - Didn't you post a few days ago how much you loved THE WEDDING SINGER? While I loved the film version, I don't see it as one of the all time great films of all time.
Just to clarify my point, I'm not necessarily praising the show, I just think it's going to be tremendously succesful commercially. I do think it's possible to speculate on how well a show will do based on reading reviews and listening to recordings.
I don't live in SF and haven't seen LB yet, but this show has been in development for years and I've heard most of the songs.
I don't care if a show is based on a crappy movie or the most brilliant novel of our time. What matters is how the material is translated into a work of musical theater. I don't think there's anything inherently less creative in making a musical from an existing movie than crafting one out of thin air.
Yes, Waitress!
I did, in fact enjoy the "The Wedding Singer" very much! Thanks for following along!
I might like "Leaglly Blonde" on stage, too, but I'd never confuse either of them for good literature or films! (Nor do I believe I ever said such a thing!) HAHA!
One of the worst movies? You're lucky if that's the worst movie you've ever seen. The movie is total bubblegum and doesn't claim to be much more (nor does the musical). With the opening song entitled "Omigod You Guys", you can tell that the show is going to be pure fun. What is wrong with that? I don't understand.
It looks silly and delightful.
DRSisLove, you obviously think more than the concept is a good idea, considering you've stated your praise and enjoyment of it in other threads (even though you've yet to see the show.)

I don't think the "idea" of it is ridiculous. But, the show may have the potential to be.

People like fluff. This is fluff. Instead of connecting, it makes them forget their real life troubles. It was a box office hit. It's like the difference between watching public television and the E Channel. Fantasy. Fluff. People seem to like that more and more these days. And if it gets teens and tweens to the theater, well they just might grow more mature one day, find they love live theater and graduate to more "serious" entertainment. Or not. Nothing wrong with letting people like what they like. There's something for everyone out there to adore.
And if you want to see a musical with a more serious, complex tone and awesome source material, go see Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. It's about to close.

I loved how this comes from someone who's screen name is a reference to WICKED.
Just kind of a random thought but, when will Laura Bell Bundy stop doing fluff shows? I mean Wicked,Hairspray and this! There's nothing wrong with it but it was just something I happened to noticed.
I do understand that we have to take into consideration that there's no such thing as 'traditional Broadway' anymore. Looking at the shows we have now, there's such a variety.
But I think we had our fair share of fluff.

I agree! Now THATS a great piece of theatre!

Maybe the Tony Awards could start a new category for Best Popcorn Musical.
atleast LBB has a job. Many NY actors would kill to be where she is.
I don't think the idea is ridiculous, I think of all movies, this is one that could easily make the transition. I don't know if it is any good, but the idea is far from ridiculous.
And Becoz_ - I take it you didn't see RUTHLESS, one of the funniest, edgiest, greatest off-Broadway musicals ever. Bundy was 12 years old, and her performance was absolute perfection.
I don't understand the problem anyway - people are cast how they are cast. If she's cast in fluff musicals, at least she's being cast. What is wrong with it?
