It's Only Play Stage Door

Posted: 9/30/14 at 1:30amI waited at Addams Family twice and Waiting for Godot and Nathan came out all three times and signed. I don't think he took pictures, but he was very gracious.

Went to the first preview, and stage doored both that show and the following night.
Got to the theater around 4-5 the night of the first preview, as I was hoping to catch those who typically didn't stage door after (Nathan) before the show. After about 20 minutes, he came out to his car, and I quickly asked him to sign and for a picture, both of which he was nice enough to do (I've been told he never poses for a picture, right?).
The first preview was weird, with them coming out to pose for the photo op in front of the barricades, then they shuffled everyone else away after, and nothing was signed following.
The next morning, I waited before the show and got Megan Mually and then Matthew Broderick (who stood around just to talk to me for a few minutes, even saying "nah, I've got a few minutes to spare", and then proceeded to sign for me, took a photo, and just stood out there talking to me. I asked him, very nervously , if he'd mind also signing a "Ferris" DVD for me, and he actually did!)
Got Michach as well in between rehersals, as well as F Murray Abraham.
After the show, finally got Rupert, so the only person from the show I didn't get a picture with or anything from was Stockard (who was shuffled into and out of the theater).
So the best way is to catch them on their way into the theater, but just be polite, and very grateful of their time.

Posted: 9/30/14 at 2:50pmExactly. I knew it'd be my best shot, because I had a strong feeling after the shows are a nightmare with him, so I gave it a try, and he was gracious enough to sign for me and then pose for a picture. (I was expecting one or the other, if any, but I asked and was surprised he obliged to both.)

Posted: 9/30/14 at 3:35pmifuweregay93, you were very lucky. When I chose to stage door before the performance, Nathan wasn't very accommodating. He came down the middle of the road, to avoid us. I wasn't interested in him anyway. The guy who runs the stage door was a little too much. There was only five of us and he kept moving us further and further away from the stage door. By the time I left, we were a good 100 feet from the stage door. He kept on stating that no one would sign, etc. But Michah, Rupert, and F Murray gladly signed and took pictures. Megan walked down the middle of the road also, avoiding us, but at least was nice to me when she refused a picture. (She was running late). I really wanted her the most. Mathew, I have previous pleasant experiences.

This was the first preview, so that may have been why. I'm presuming they had barricades up? That didn't start until day 2. Day 1, never had any barricades up. Nathan was again the biggest shock, because he has a long history of just not working well with crowds. But probably because they had no barricades up, and I was able to patiently wait until he walked over, he didn't feel as pressured or obligated. But I'm assuming it's very rare for there not to be barricades, right?
Megan was also interesting. She never would've allowed a picture if it wasn't just me. I literally walked up and she was standing, admiring the picture of all of them on the door, and I asked if I could get a picture. She nodded, took a picture, and never said a single word to me, but she seemed pleasant beyond that. She didn't say no, and again, I never made anyone feel pressured. I was very polite.
Rupert was the one who took two days to meet, but worth it after all that.

Posted: 10/1/14 at 9:25pmInteresting, I've never thought to wait by the stage-door before the show. Is that considered rude? It seems like the actors might not appreciate being stopped on their way in -- but then again, they're probably less exhausted than they would be after the show. It sounds like ifuweregay93 and Artman had some success with it. I'd be curious to hear if it has worked out for others for this show.

Posted: 10/2/14 at 8:34amI have a more general question that's in line with earlier posts--is it generally true that performers are less likely to stage door after preview performances than regular ones? Or does it depend completely on the actor?

I don't know for certain, but I would imagine that until a performance is pretty set, actors who are in previews would be less likely to come to stage door afterward. By the time notes from the creative team are reviewed and possibly rehearsed, there wouldn't be many fans outside.
After the show has opened, there isn't as much to work on. That's what I believe we will see with this cast after Oct 9.

Has anyone tried to stage door recently? Is it still only Rupert and Micah coming out?
I was thinking about trying to send my playbill to the theater with a SASE and a cash donation to try to get my playbill signed by the entire cast. Has anyone tried this/had luck with this/have any tips?

Yes, its considered rude to stage door before the show.
Yes, it is less likely for the cast to stage door during previews...as they are still in rehearsal during the day plus performing at night. Once the show opens, they have minimal rehearsals during the day.

Posted: 12/18/14 at 12:54pmMicah Stock, Rupert Grint, and Matthew Broderick come out fairly regularly. I think Nathan Lane comes out every once in a while, but I've heard that Megan Mullally, Stockard Channing, and F. Murray Abraham don't come out at all. I sent a request in for a cast signed playbill a few days ago with a check for $50 to BC/EFA (I heard others who attempted the same but without a check and they received a letter in response asking for a $50 donation). Haven't heard back yet, of course, but will let everyone know when I do.

Posted: 2/8/15 at 5:55pmI'm seeing the show this Friday night with a friend, but I'm curious. Has anyone had success with Matthew Broderick signing non-show items? We will definitely have playbills, but we're just wondering if we can get away with other stuff to. Thanks!

I went to see this in January. The play was not very funny --and that was a shock. I thought, with that cast, it HAS to be funny. But not really.
The only person who came out and signed was Katy Finneran. F. Murray and Stockard both came out another door, slipped into cars and were gone before anyone realized who they were. Finneran came out, took pictures and signed and was very nice. After waiting for quite a while on a VERY cold night, an elderly woman went up and started pushing a buzzer by the stage door, which I thought was unnecessary. Eventually, the people at the stage door were told that everyone had left and the crowd dispersed. Again, it was an incredibly cold night so I don't blame anyone for not coming out, though the people waiting certainly waited a lot longer than it would have taken for signatures and pictures (probably ten minutes would have been all it took).

@mattmarkowski99
I was at the show last night and only Matthew Broderick and Micah Stock came out to sign. Martin bolted into a car while saying "I'm not signing tonight." It was very cold last night though, so most of the cast left. I have seen evidence that Martin does sign, but I can't tell you how often that is. It's worth a shot though. Good luck! Let me know if you need anymore information.

Posted: 2/14/15 at 3:27pmFor all the pounding Broderick takes on this board, I can say that I have seen several of his plays and can attest that he appears at stage door quite frequently to sign and pose for pictures. He appears to take his commitment to a show very seriously in terms of promotion and fan appreciation.
