Elizabeth’s return last night was grand, dramatic, and beautiful. The real tears she shed throughout were so heart wrenching. Clearly experiencing such a heavy role in front of an audience for the first time in 1.75 years was an emotional experience for her! And seeing her finally perform it again was emotional for the whole crowd.
It’s wild how dramatically different her and Heidi’s interpretations of the character are, and they’re both extraordinary. Both deserve to be seen. I think I prefer Heidi as the “grounded” MJ in the family related scenes (she brings a great sarcastic, humorous edge), and Elizabeth as the “breaking at the seams” MJ in the drug-related scenes (she often gets the shakes as a drug addict would and generally seems more frazzled/glassy, and I love her more dramatic take on the church scene). But really, that doesn’t mean either is bad at doing the other by any means. They’re both extraordinary performers with two fascinating versions of an incredibly complex character. See both if you can!
I find it pretty amusing that now there are two musicals on Broadway about a character named MJ who’s addicted to prescribed painkillers (and both shows also feature an on-stage band that rolls out on a platform). xD
